Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests! I have captured Bimmy again, mwahahaha! This time he won't escape!
Anyway, this week's game is going to be Mutant Virus.  Here are the rules:

  • Play till game over
  • Take your picture at the game over screen
  • Highest score wins
  • Participation: 20,000
  • Genre Puzzle
Yes, this is a proof that we hate you all and want you to suffer.
I am sure everyone will enjoy this week thoroughly and everyone will beat the game!

The contest ends Sunday, 8/12/18 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

Lol. This wasn't expected. Now if only Guitarzombie would turn up. He hasn't been as active this year.

I would join fighting the viruses but I have a PAL system. Why is that forbidden? Would a PAL system have an advantage?
The cart I own is NTSC. My NES is region-free. I don't think Mutant Virus was released on PAL.

Stage 1 is deceptively easy. It looks like stage 2 is where the real game begins.

Oh, Stage 2 is also something most people can get through with a little effort. Its level 3 and especially 4 and 5 that makes the game get its reputation as one of the hardest on the system. You'd think a game with only 5 levels couldn't be that much trouble, but it is.

I still remember when I beat it. I was just hanging on with no life left waiting to game over and I have no idea what happened. Suddenly the room just cleared by some miracle.

I must be doing something wrong because I haven't beaten stage 2.

The reason it is forbidden is only for games that are slowed down compared to their NTSC counterpart (the 50 FPS vs 60 FPS thing), so you're okay to compete this week, no problem man.

I really, really hate the controls. So aggravating. I love when you have to go near the exit to get to the viruses and your stupid momentum makes you accidentally leave the area, you come back, and now viruses have spread to everywhere. Stage 2 is still supposed to be the easy part. Then I'd hate to see stage 3!

And what's with all the weapons options? Which ones are useful and for what?

EDIT: Never mind. I looked up an online manual that was helpful. I'll give it another go.

EDIT: No, I was right the first time, this game can go suck a dick.

Here's a map over Level 2 if that helps. Was made by Guitarzombie. I remember finding using a map useful.

Thanks.

I hate the controls. It's annoying to play.

so i just downloaded 3 separate roms for this. All 3 give a black screen after the main menu. Initial cutscene just never starts. What am I missing here?

My rom is "Mutant Virus, The (U).nes" and runs fine with Nestopia.

Downloaded nestopia and it seems to work fine with all 3 roms. Very bizarre. I was using virtuanes and have been for years. this is the first game that hasn't worked for me. Even stranger that it gets the main menu and then stops. thanks

You're welcome. FCEUX and Nestopia seem to be the best emulators in terms of general compatibility and accuracy.

I use "Nestopia Undead" that is like a more recently updated version.

Wow. Nice score.

Unfortunately I really, really, really, really, really, really, really hate this tedious piece of shit game so I won't be able to top that.

I actually do like the game for some strange reason. Perhaps I'm the only one. I hope I will be able to play it before Sunday.

I've been playing this game for the past few days at work and I actually really like it too. It's definitely hard, and has some bullshit elements to it, but overall, it's kind of addicting. trying to break 400k right now

This game is incredible annoying in that your first play through you're able to clear a stage quickly and cover the "virus" and on the next play through it takes you 30 minutes to clear a room and you have to consistantly go back to spots. Is there a "trigger" section to the virus that keeps the virus from spreading or taking over an already covered spot?

No baby yet, so I had a few hours to kill.  Not a bad game at all.  Boring...but not bad.
