Sweet thread! The VCS/2600 was my first console, and I still play it from time to time. I consider Space Invaders, Missile Command and Berzerk to be my favorites. About 7-8 years ago, I was still using my original woody from the 80s, but one day it stopped working for me. So I made a deal on NA with CaptainMorganDrinker for this beautiful Vader edition, and it's been working like a champ ever since. Depending on the game, I generally prefer using my Genesis controller to the Atari joystick for my gaming. Here's the bulk of my modest Atari collection.

That's quite a haul!! Jr. Pacman kicks ass! Reactor is also an often overlooked gem, although its a little confusing how to play if you are just picking it up for the first time. (watch the classic game room review or read the manual for an explanation)

It is! And it only happens because I'm here on NA. Fuck the hate.

But yeah, this is all really awesome. I haven't played most of these games before but quite a few of my priorities are in the box so I'm happy. Yars' Revenge is fucking awesome. And it will be cool to finally play some of the Swordquest games. And I've been dying to try ET.

Stampede was one of the first video games I ever played. I'm still nuts about it. When I saw a second copy in a shop a few years ago, I snagged it just in case my other copy ever craps out. It's also on the 'Activision Anthology' on the PS2 which is an amazing collection with excellent presentation if you've never played it. The interface is a typical teenager's bedroom in the 80s, with a boombox filled with classic hits and there are tons of great unlockables like the old patches, interviews and classic commercials.

The thing about Stampede is that it gets so incredibly intense. There is a strategy to it, and you need the utmost focus when the speed picks up because of the skulls and black sheep. I'm sure if someone walked in and saw me while I'm deep into it, I'd probably look like a wide-eyed zombie staring at the screen.

Nice! I actually do that with Mario games, have 2 or 3 of each game on NES and SNES

that's exactly how I feel about Kaboom, I can seriously play that game for hours straight. Haven't got to that point with Stampede yet, but if I ever get tired of kaboom that'll be the next one on the list to obsess over

As for more copies... I have way too many of Super Metroid but I have stupid reasons for holding on to each one.

And yeah, that's what is cool about arcade/Atari games. Very simplistic but there is something in there meant to hook you. There aren't hour long tedious bullshit levels like modern gaming. It's few minute bits you can stretch out if you're into it. Which is also another reason I made that kitchen nook for mine. If I'm cooking and I need to boil for 10 minutes? Atari here I come. Bite sized games are under appreciated.

Woo! I managed to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars just now. Very satisfying. That inverted up and down throws me off.

Edit: Just destroyed the Death Star twice in Return on the same continue. My skills are improving.

the woman would kill me if I left a tv, an Atari and some games in the kitchen   but yeah, it's the fact that you can play for a couple minutes or couple hours if you feel like it that's a big draw for me. Like if I try to start a 30 hour rpg, I get an hour or two in, and maybe I don't get another chance to play for a week or even a month and I completely forgot what's going on in the story. With these small, simple games I can enjoy them for any amount of time at my leisure and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything if I don't come back to it any time soon.

Totally. The same goes for drinking. Don't know how many times I've played RPGs or story driven games while drinking and the the next day when I turn it on I think 'What the fuck is going on right now? Where am I?'

Also, having a young child that already absolutely loves the Atari helps the argument for having one in the kitchen.   She's asked to play Air Sea Battle so many times already.

That is fantastic. I actually showed my mom kaboom several years ago and she loved it too. It's just twisting the knob and catching bombs. Anyone can get it

This thread makes me want to play some Kaboom and some Stampede. Those 2 games are the 2600's best IMO, along with most of the Activision games.

Also, one thing I really like about Atari is all of the weird third party games that got released back then. Games like Lost Luggage are also favourites of mine just because someone thought of that concept and made it into a game, something that would never get released today anymore. Unless someone makes Airport Employee Simulator 2017 that is

Dragonfire! That's a fun one.

Thankfully my family basically never got rid of any of our Atari games (or other video games), so almost everything we had BITD is still either with me or at my parents' house. It can be an incredibly fun system, and the paddle controllers offer a kind of gameplay seldom seen since: 4P action with Warlords, or its updated homebrew grandchild Medieval Mayhem? Yes please.

BTW speaking of homebrews it's a terrific platform for those, though I've never understood why people focus so much on Princess Rescue. To me, games like Thrust, Medieval Mayhem, and the sadly unfinished Man Goes Down are far more polished efforts -- conceived for the system from the ground up, and with graphics and sound that mesh perfectly with the Atari's strengths.

Big fan of the Intellivision too, which is also one of the only systems I really collect for (mine is 90% complete or so). We all think of the NES as the first console RPG platform, but the Intellivision was way ahead of it with games like Treasure of Tarmin (1983) and, especially, the roguelike Tower of Doom (1987, though the game was first demoed in 1983 before further development was delayed by the crash).

I played Tower of Doom for the first time in 1989 or so, and was blown away: this supposedly obsolete console was offering the kind of RPG I'd only ever seen on computers, with slick graphics and sound. Great stuff.

Dragonfire! That is the name!
I will have to look for it around so I can enjoy it in it's full glory again!

Despite the huge bunch I traded to Loxx, I still have plenty more extras!   Shipping might be a killer though; I'll have to see how many fit in a padded flat rate envelope.

Wow, I just tried Stampede today and I never realized it was so strategic. I had only briefly looked at before and just thought of it as a shoot'em up except with a horse & lassoe instead of a spaceship and bullets... but there's a lot more to it, timing and deciding when to rope and when to bump makes it a much deeper game!

Yeah, thats fair. Can't really fault them can I? Fuck all the people who keep buying it  I did think it was neat that they had the easter egg in Black Ops 2 where you can play some of their atari games.

Eh, I guess. I think its more the fact, that the company was originally founded by creative people being who were tired of Ataris shit. They started their own company because they wanted to see some recognition for their work. Now they buy up whatevers cool and rerelease it until nobody wants to buy it anymore. (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Cod, fucking Candy Crush?)

But are those same people still around now? Plus... they're not actually making the games like they probably did back in the days of Atari.
