Let me preface this by saying I know little about protos so please forgive any errors.

However, some years ago I acquired the box art for what was going to be Wacky-Man.    I also have film from the company handling the design including photographs of a box.    The photos looked high quality so I presume at least one copy of the box was printed up (doesn't look to be mock up; looks too good).

anyways, I had a brief discussion with Frank / RedEye about it a year or three ago and I'm just wondering if a ROM has been found, or if there is anything else out there about the title?    I understand it was a localization of Don Doko Don 2.     The mock up box had Natsume markings in the template similar to SCAT and shadow of the ninja, with the purple natsume box top left.

WTB Cdn sealed black boxes, sealed Cdn first party titles.    I.e. the "mattel" Cdn boxes with both french and english.   Mainly black boxes, zelda, link, and tyson, but let me know what you have.    I am interested in anything I don't already have!

And a picture of the published Don Doko Don 2 box.

I'd love to hear any info or thoughts, thank you.

Ha. More out of curiosity than anything. Prototype art is really interesting to me and I'm a huge Natsume fan. So if I were to Shell out for art, something like this would be high on the list. Really awesome piece

That's interesting that they apparently had Greg Winters stick close to the original JP art. Most localized games typically have something completely different.

Have you ever uploaded the video to the web? It would be interesting to watch.

I think when he said film he meant photographic film, not video. But that would be nice to see!

Loving the artwork! Good to see the artist remaining faithful to the original in that it's different but still good in its own right! And, I have a fondness for gnomes and classic Taito.

I'm surprised more proto collector's haven't chimed in. The possibility of a possible proto floating around somewhere is pretty cool to me. One would think there might be or was a proto cartridge since the box art was completed. I would be excited if a localized prototype was eventually found.

HI IT'S ME

No proto found yet that I'm aware of. I can also tell you with near-absolute certainty that this was never formally announced or advertised to store buyers: I've been through every U.S. video game magazine published during the NES' lifetime, and have looked at all the available dealer material/sales sheets at the National Videogame Museum and the Strong Museum. I've also been through every Nintendo third party directory from Don Doko Don 2's era (these are booklets they'd have at CES that outlined all of the current and upcoming products, by publisher). It's *possible* that they were soliciting it to buyers without formally working with Nintendo to announce it, but I really really doubt it.

My guess for the "why" is pretty simple: Don Doko Don 2 came out in 1992 on the Famicom. Natsume U.S. had completely abandoned 8-bit by this point and was only pushing 16-bit games. It seems to me like this was a project they were working on internally that they pulled the plug on before they got around to announcing it. It's actually kind of remarkable that they got as far as laying out the packaging before they'd even announced it, but it's not completely unheard of.

weeeeeeeeird, im a pretty big natsume fan too and ive never even heard of a potential dkd2 localization. that artwork is really somethin else, awesome to see. guess maybe they didnt localize it here beyond being late era possibly because its got a similar look to snow bros? that came out in 1990, so i guess they didnt want it to flop here based on similarity maybe?

i guess snow bros was a bit different all told, but snow bros was in the arcade as well right? maybe theres something to it being somewhat similar ip where they didnt wanna possibly wind up in court with capcom/toaplan over an 8bit title.. i guess there could be a lot there as to why but i'd think frank's fully on the money, by 92 they were probably so sick of the ports and localizing stuff here. thanks for sharin this with us bronty, really cool stuff!
