Using religion as an excuse for bigotry...I'm sick of it. It's not ok. Hateful beliefs should never be protected

I agree that there is a lot of vitriol against her in social media, and that doesn't really help the situation. However, I will also point out that for every one of those you find I can find you an equally hateful comment on both sides. So let's not pretend all the hate is on the side against her. I have read some EXTREMELY nasty and hateful comments in her support, including one yesterday that said gays trying to get married are worse than child molesters. Yes, you read that right. Someone actually said that.

Depending on where you look and the source, you will actually find a lot of support for both sides here.

Unfortunately for her, the LEGAL side, and legal commentary on the situation typically does not agree with her because legally she has no stance. The multiple levels of court agreeing with that are backing up my comment here.

Just an example that social media != real life:

"Rachelle Bombe has sat there every day, wearing rainbow colors and carrying signs that demand marriage equality. One particularly hot day, Davis, the woman she was there to protest against, worried Bombe would get overheated and offered her a cold drink. In turn, Bombe said she's checked in on Davis, whose lawyer says she's received death threats and hate mail, to make sure she's holding up despite the difficult circumstances.

"She's a very nice lady, I like her a lot," Bombe said of Davis. "We're on the opposite sides of this, but it's not personal.""

My son... gives me Helpful Nintendo Hints that are far too complex for the adult mind to comprehend. Here's a verbatim example: "OK, there's Ganon and miniature Ganon and there's these things like jelly beans and the miniature Ganon is more powerfuller, because when you touch him the flying eagles come down and the octopus shoots red rocks and the swamp takes longer." And the hell of it is, I know he's right. - Dave Barry

Christian won't give marriage license to gays.

Quaker won't give gun license to anyone.

Fundamentalist Muslim won't give drivers license to women.

How many people are ok with one, but not the rest?

Well for some reason there are people out there who actually think it's ok to use their religion as a reason to not accept others, or even worse...harm others. What this woman is doing is harmful...and she hides behind her religion to do it.

If only that were the worst of it.  10 Islamic countries have the death penalty on their books for homosexuality (and adultery).  Besides their despicable habit of beheading  (and other sundry ways of dispatchment  they find amusing ) captives,  ISIS has tossed gays off of high buildings and then stoned their shattered bodies until they are dead.

If they're in a public service position like Kim Davis is, I wouldn't be okay with any of them.

You spoke too soon! She's officially in jail now.

True, but how many countries would allow four court appearances and possibly more in the future?

For a peaceful non-violent display of protest against a hotly debated issue like this, probably more than you think.

I actually didn't want her to go to jail, but the judge had a point in that a fine would just be paid by her supporters and she'd go right on ignoring the order.

If Rowan County allows for a recall election against an elected county clerk and I lived there, I would support that campaign. Her personal beliefs are disrupting the orderly functioning of her office and costing the county money, whether in legal fees or license fees. She can't run her office from jail and the law is not going to be changed to accommodate her personal beliefs. She cannot choose to enforce only the laws that she likes. The people of Rowan County have a right to elected officials who will perform the ordinary duties of their office with promptness and efficiency. She is not performing this simple duty, issuing a marriage license, for any couple, heterosexual or homosexual. Therefore she should not be a county clerk and should resign. The judge should give her that option as a get out of jail free card.

People who have a moral or religious objection to capital punishment and will never vote to apply the death penalty cannot sit on a jury in a capital case in this country, regardless of how qualified they may otherwise be as a juror or how good a citizen they may be. Likewise, the armed forces have long recognized the rights of conscientious objectors to serve in non-combat roles that would not violate their principles against killing their fellow men. Perhaps Ms. Davis would do better to find another place in local government where she could serve without having to find such a repugnant (to her) task as part of her regular duties.

BTW, comparing her to, say, Dred Scott, an article I read had a better comparison, George C. Wallace standing in the way of black students attempting to enroll in the University of Alabama.

So at this point it looks like the Kentucky dust-up is settled.
