Damn!

I guess their is just something about Dr. Mario that gets the Old Guard here at Nintendoage to take their guns out.
If it weren't for KrakenSoup representing the New Crew at #4, The New Crew (2012-present) would be getting our asses handed to us this week.

erizisto and myself are currently hanging in there, but I wonder if the Old Guard will sweep the Top 10 by the end of the week?

In any event... VERY nice score A.Thrower.  I heard you and GameboyRicky had a really great-to-watch head to head battle once too.

Does anybody know if this trick works on the solid colored pills as well? 😄

Damn I'm having a hell of a time cracking the top ten so far this year. Then again every game we've played so far I'm not really that strong at. Oh first half of the 2014 contests how I miss you....

I'm going to make one last string of attempts tonight to get back in the top 3. If there was ever a contest I could come close to winning, it's this one. I highly doubt you will ever see me near the top of the list in any future contests.

EVERYONE: Please check the updated leaderboards on the main High Score Contest thread EACH WEEK to make sure that I haven't accidentally double-entered your username (easiest thing to check is to skim down the main leaderboard)

With this many contestants it is a lot of trouble to back-check spellings on every username.

Problems are extremely simple to fix and update, just hard for someone other than an individual user to spot.

Ya, me two. Except for Arcade games, I think I'll just be taking participation in the near future...

The best thing people can do is to simply skim the main leaderboard each week for THEIR OWN NAME to make sure there aren't any double-entries.

Santa tries his best, I'm sure, to be consistent, but over the course of last year I know Guillavoie didn't always have 100% consistent use of spaces versus dashes versus underscores with some people's names.  And there is the always the risk of me transcribing a spelling related typo, as well.

(the string of numbers at the end of Vectrex's name are a great example of something that often gets miskeyed in the high score tables, in turn generating multiple entries)

I'm genuinely impressed I could do such a score... I mean last time I checked, I sucked ass at this game - I think I'm slowly becoming good at Dr. Mario

Since it's the top sticky on the sub-forum, I didn't think that was necessary in my post

I'm glad to be back as well. Without the contests every week I would of never been able to say I maxed the score on Battletoads

Thanks for all the kind words but the comparison above is by far my favorite.

Ricky, how much time does a game like that take?

29 entries so far, let's shoot for 50 again! Not sure we've ever had 50+ participants 3 straight weeks. That would be amazing.

I think this game was just under 4 hours straight.  Most of that time was playing level 24 over and over again.  After a certain point it becomes more about stamina then skill.  As you play over and over again it's easy to get careless and if you make a mistake within the first 15 seconds or so at level 24 then it's real difficult to recover.

Any tips from the pros?
I'm certainly no pro Ron, but there are a few tips I can offer...

- Combo whenever you safely can. Combos (clearing more than 1 virus in the same drop) add tons more points than simply clearing viruses one at a time.
This is considerably easier at the lower levels to plan, but many times at the beginning of the higher levels there are more opportunities to do so.
Back in the 2014 Winter playoffs, NA Member arch_8ngel was able to string together entire levels and clear them all in one shot like a Rube Goldberg machine.

- Save a space for unwanted pills (and try to stack them in colors).  gutsman004 already mentioned this, but if you do not have a place set aside for the inevitable garbage pills you'll die quickly.

- Don't Panic when things look hopeless! Oh No! You accidentally sealed off one side of the level and can't get over there! Don't give up. If you dig in your heels, you can knock down those pills by going underneath that pile and saving your skin. If you want to post a big score, you'll eventually have to overcome this problem... At least once.

- Level 18 is the Gateway to High Score Heaven. (this was also mentioned by gutsman004) For unknown reasons, Level 18 seems to be a tougher Challange than the next couple stages. Get past this stage and you should be in for a significant bump in your overall performance.

- Remember, you can clear viruses vertically AND horizontally. It's easy to forget there are multiple ways to clear those nasty viruses. Sometimes a change in perspective can save your life.

- Lastly... Try not to peek at your score too much until the end. You cannot time out in Dr. Mario (although the pills will fall faster over time). Focus on combos first, then survive when you have to.
At least for me, it's a lot more fun staving off death at the higher levels than constantly watching the score tick up.

Again, I am not a Dr. Mario Master by any means. These are just the things I use to get by.

These are really great tips!

Thats really impressive dude, awesome job! I would love to see a play through of a score like that just to see what type of strategy is involved... Not that I could ever duplicate it.

I've only been here a year and I'm having more fun now than in the last 12 months. I'm so happy to be participating in contests here. I've actually been waiting for Dr. Mario to pop up because I'm probably better at that game than any other... Except maybe Tetris Attack (hint hint) As long as there are contests with games I think I can handle I will keep on participating! :-)
