Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests!  This week's game is gonna be a shoot 'em up and will be 1942.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Game Over
  • Take your picture on the Title Screen
  • Any exploits or glitches to attain unlimited lives or rack up extra lives for the purpose of point racking is forbidden.  Anyone suspected of doing this will have their score disqualified.
  • It is forbidden to die on purpose to attain 100% accuracy.  Anyone suspected of doing this will have their score disqualified.
  • If you roll the score, make sure to take a picture right before the roll and right after.  This goes for every roll of the score.
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Shoot 'Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 11/17/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

You should add the rule that the participants must crank up the volume on that bad boy to max at all times.
Good luck to all!

Just remember about the score roll! And a bonus 75 points should be given to anyone who can do what DMG says. The "music" seriously gives me a headache.

Indeed, we need pictures of the before and after the fact.

Last time we played this 1-life only. I can't believe I rolled the score on 1 life.

JD, you must defend your hard earned title this very week!

Play that bad boy on an emulator. Just be sure not to use save states.

Well, you could still play in all fairness on emulator. If you want to get games in advance, take a look at the leaderboard thread, the list of upcoming games is available: http://nintendoage.com/forum/mess...

I was going to skip this week after I found out we didn't own this game (I mistaken 1943 for it)and since I'm usually not a fan of auto-scroll shooters, but then I forgot to submit my score for Arch Rivals before work . Since I'm skipping Thanksgiving week because I work in retail hell and I just missed this last contest, I'll be in on this one.

As much as I'd love to, I'm taking some college classes, and homework has monopolized my time,

So a new 1942 champion will have to be crowned this week!

Also, don't know what you dudes are talking about, that beep beep beeping is a kick-ass soundtrack.

C'mon man, I'm sure you can do your homework and play 1942 at the same time and excel at both

Nice work right out of the gate!

About how long would you say it took you to complete the game? I think I got through 6.5 stages and it seemed like I was playing for a while. Full 32 stages has to be about an hour and a half?

^Yeah, give or take. I imagine several people will do this. The game isn't that hard. You get a life for every 80,000 you get which is about every third stage (or every stage if you can get the 100% accuracy bonus) so as long as you don't die every other stage you should be fine. I think I beat it only losing 5-6 lives, most of which were in the last 5-6 stages.

One piece of advice I can give is make shooting down the small green planes that come from the sides of the screen a top priority. Clearing them out will give you plenty (usually) of room to move around. Also do not stay at the very bottom of the screen as those bigger planes will come from that direction. Try to stay in the dead center or slightly bottom center of the screen, This will allow you to take out those pesky swooping green planes that come from the sides. Once you get the 4 shot power up as well as the mini planes, you can mow down just about anything. And I think there is a "boss fight" every 8th stage. It isn't hard. What I ended up doing is staying at the bottom left of the screen and moving slightly to accordance to where the bullets were headed.

Also I've been practicing on this game for the past like 2 weeks and had never beaten it prior so I know all you guys can do it.

Oh,and you get a 100,000 bonus if you can complete each stage with a 100% accuracy rating, which isn't very easy to do. I've only done it twice, and neither were on this run. I'm not sure exactly what qualifies you to get this bonus,as I went through stages only shooting down a couple of planes and dodging everything else (harder than you think) and I'd get some horrible rating like 26% and an equally crappy bonus.

Oddly enough, the 2nd to last stage is the hardest stage in the game. So if you can beat that stage, you pretty much have it in the bag as the last stage is almost like a victory lap. It's almost like replaying stage 1...maybe even easier.

I think there is a way to boost your shooting percentage by dying in a level, cause it keeps track of how many planes you destroyed and add the extra planes you will destroy until the end of the stage.

Do you guys think we should adjust rules given this is true? I know Tom or JD would know for sure about this.

This is correct. There are also very good spots to die if you have some lives to spare.

This makes sense as both times I got a 100% accuracy rating (again, none on this run) was when I initially died during a boss fight and when I fought the boss plane again and won I got 100% accuracy. Uh..what?

Guil you are correct.

The only way to get 100% on some levels is to die on purpose.
