You know how some American versions of Japanese NES games are made much harder such as Bayou Billy? Vice Project Doom could have used this approach. The life bar should have been drastically reduced or damage from enemies increased. You get way too much health.
Not to mention health drops are plentiful, respawning, and therefore ridiculously easy to abuse. Plus since they always come before boss fights you don't even have to sweat on any boss once you discover the optimal pattern.
There were sections in the game where I would intentionally take damage just to get through it faster, or to gain a few seconds of invincibility to reduce the danger of getting knocked into a pit. It's easy when you can afford to get hit.
