If I had screwed up inputting the Konami code just one more time, I would not have had enough time to post my final score update. I can't get over how close that was last night.
I noticed how much trouble that gave you.  Don't think I ever once had an issue with that, is it something with the AVS?

It happened on my top loader too just about as often.  I don't know if it had to do with me hitting Start to advance the title screen right away, or I hit the buttons too fast, or I started inputting too early, etc.  More than half the time I didn't get the code inputted right.

By the way, I had no idea you were watching!  Based on my performance last night on stream, clearly I am worse at games than Bea.
I always hit start, and I input it relatively slow

Yeah I was watching and I realized right away that you'd beat me score-wise, but I tuned out with 40 minutes to go since you appeared to be falling apart

Crazy that you needed to no-death the game to even place this week

No death a game that many people outside of this small circle would consider nigh impossible to do so, at that.

Indeed, its reputation doesn't quite match up to reality.

It seemed for awhile that I'd never be able to no-death Contra, even though I have the skill to do it.  I am pretty mistake prone but usually I have enough leeway for my skill to override that.  A no-death run always takes away that leeway!

I'm sure I can no-death it, but it'd take a bit more practise, and to get on the level of ALSO trying to kill as little as possible would be another step up, and it was just far too busy a week for me to put in the time. I'm happy I was able to beat it though, and to do so with relatively few deaths (few enough that I'd not need the Konami code to beat the game!).

If I could it in 4 days (or whatever it was), while being limited to the small windows where everyone is sleeping, anyone could. Even skinny.

But you were used to Contra III and the original is a cakewalk compared to that shit.

I'm not that used to it.

But for having such a reputation, I think all of these contest games we've played would be harder to no-death:

Adventure Island
Battletoads
Double Dragon
Double Dragon II
1943
Iron Sword
Kick Master
Mighty Bomb Jack
Mendel Palace
Bubble Bobble
Rad Racer
Ghosts n Goblins
Adventure Island II
QBert
Lunar Pool
The Guardian Legend
Bayou Billy
Paperboy 2
Marble Madness
Star Tropics

That's practically every non sports/arcade/puzzle game from the last two seasons

Hell, without the warps I bet Super Mario Bros. is in there too

Agree for the most part. I've only no-deathed Marble Madness and Double Dragon II from that list.

It is funny that Contra is generally considered quite hard and SMB easy when it's probably closer to the other way around. (Not that Contra is a complete pushover. It's just overrated in terms of difficulty.)

Well done, everyone.
It was a very competitive week for sure!
It was, but not for you. The whole zero people that topped your score must have had you shaking so badly you nearly had a wardrobe accident!

I did manage to capture a no death run tonight. I'll post it to YouTube tomorrow. Ironically, it would have beaten my previous best score and given me the advantage over mbd

Lots of people topped the first score I posted!
But thanks to the power of math, absinthe and documented wardrobe accidents, I could put in a paltry score despite my absolutely terrible video game skills!
And I will be recording a video tonight as well. It was fun.

Bea, you're pissing on my should and telling me it's raining again! Your first score was sub 18k. Only two others this week (tables and Stryphos) made a sub 18k post. That does not qualify as "lots of people"! Try again!

My first score was 595K with 32 lives left!
That was about 18600 and lots of people have beaten that!
Granted, it was just a practice run that Brock submited as legit, but still!

And I... may have withheld a 613K score with 35 lives because the TV reflection showed entirely too much.

A lot of people still easily crushed that score so it still counts.
Also, it would be awesome to have Guil back to the fray, even though I will go back to lurker mode, much akin to Red, next year.

There were some really great scores this week! I wish I would've had a chance to play, but real life has been rough the last two weeks. Great job everyone!

Last night I captured video of a 622K no death run. I will upload it tonight.
I was too conservative and played too safe on that run, I feel.

Why do you feel it was too conservative?

Why do you feel it was too conservative?

I killed too many turrets just to play safe, which netted me 3K more points than my last valid run and 9K more points than my best, not posted score on the Everdrive.

Here's my recorded run.
Overall, it was pretty terrible. I was too slow with some jumps and had to kill some turrets, I got a needless rapid fire upgrade at stage 7 which added 1,500 points to my score. I tried to be cute and not kill one of the eggs at the final boss and ended up having to kill 8 aliens, which netted me 1,000 points more than killing the egg would. And got me some VERY close calls too. >.>

Hard to believe that kids can be this bad at games. It's like watching a bunch of old people picking up a controller for the first time.
