Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  This week’s game is going to be Sqoon.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Game Over
  • No looping of the game allowed.  If you beat Phase 8, you must stop playing when the game resets to Phase 1.  You may not play any of the game after the loop.  You must stop playing and take your picture.  Anyone suspected of playing the game after the loop will have their score disqualified.
  • If you get a Game Over, take your picture on the Title Screen.  Your score will be in the High Score spot.
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Shooter/Shoot ‘Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 9/13/15 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

I didn't manage to grab a copy of Sqoon, so I'm playing on my Nvidia Shield this week.

41,300

Going to have to pick this cart up soon, even if I have to pay full retail -- it's a great game.

Football season is really going to cut into my playing time for the rest of the half, but I'll still try to at least get a score in each week.

This game reminds me of Seaquest for the Atari 2600. I was a lot better at Seaquest though.

I hadn't played Sqoon until this morning, but the theme of rescuing people in a submarine and having to take them to the surface definitely made me think of Seaquest.

I only really heard of it from the pricing threads. I would've never guessed that it was a submarine shooter. It seems like a fun game, hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to get a better run in.

Yeah its pretty fun, but rough on the hands... especially after last week. I'd like to pick up an advantage controller just to see how it feels when we play shooters.

That's for sure! I had to stop playing after my third try because my right thumb was still sore from Punch Out. I picked up an Advantage a few months back. Being able to tap the buttons and move with the joystick is a lot more comfortable, although I still prefer using a controller.

Looks like we have alot of Sqoon experts lurking on this site. I checked the old contest scores and people were up in the millions. It was a good call by Bimmy to make it one loop. It looks like back in 2009 a few people played this game for over 4 hours a pop!

No need to worry about any of them playing this week since they probably all have arthritis by now.

You're not kidding, my right thumb starts aching after about three straight attempts. I probably won't have any more time to play this week anyway, so at least I'll have a few days to rest up.

Score updated, I'm pretty sure I was on phase 8. You can really get a decent amount of extra lives in this game. I wonder if that changes on the later loops?

I checked the same thread and it looks like the winning score from that contest was over 5 million and the TG record is over 11 million. I was just barely able to finish the first loop!

Sqoon definitely seems to be influenced by Seaquest, but I couldn't find any info as to whether it was intentional or not. I'd have to say that I still prefer Seaquest, but Sqoon is a solid game in its own right.

Does the guy in the intro remind you guys of mr cinnamon from stinger? It has that quirky feel to it kinda like stinger too.

Nice scores guys! I just started playing this morning. I'm at 185k now. Hopefully I can get better by tomorrow.

Yeah, I thought of Stinger as soon as I saw the intro. Sqoon does have that similar cute/quirky feeling to it too, although it seems a little more toned down than with Stinger.
