Sorry, probably my fault.

I will buy any and all oregon trail clones that come out even if there are fifteen of them.

I guess I see two, well differentiated Oregon Trail clones to be no different than somebody releasing an Oregon Trail clone on the one hand, and a tetris clone on the other. Money's still a limited resource. I think people should just make what they want. Like, say I was NEW to this scene and I had a half completed Oar Trail, then found out about Family Vacation. I'd release it anyway, and if I were SGP, I would be happy about it (personally). It's like: just let the chips fall where they may. We can't control the market. We can just make games, and people will buy what they buy.

Definitely happy to hear this!

Competition and the market have nothing to do with it for me. It doesn't bother me if someone makes something similar, or if it could lead to a loss of sales or whatever, but it does affect motivation since that is related to originality and creativity. Even at ten I wanted to make more creatively interesting things. Again, that is a personal motivational factor, since it keeps me interested in a project. I enjoy all of the ports and/or things made under different trains of thought.

*In reply to your post about six up Derek, since I cannot quote on my phone.

I guess I'm just thinking like---what if you had two oregon trail clones that were *well differentiated* like this idea of a pirate themed one, versus Family Vacation? That to me would seem to have plenty of room for creativity for both creators.

That's why I'd call "Oregon Trail Clones" a subgenre that might more accurately (though more clumsily  ) be named "journey survival" games.

I think there are actually quite a few variations that could work, and the concept even branches well into something "exploration based" (like a sci fi setting with a colony ship) where you don't necessarily have the kind of route/map clarity that one is accustomed to with the actual Oregon Trail.

I think the fun part about the genre/project to me Derek is not having any point of comparison. Play the OT, think on it's mechanics, come up with an idea. Another well differentiated take on that throws off that, brace for the pun, "pioneer spirit." If someone else wants to freshly interpret the OT, go for it, but I personally have no interest in adding another to a stack.

Most of your customers want everything that could possibly be on said stack, in every possible genre. Lol.

*edit* ALL THE HOMEBREWS!!! *laughs maniacally and continues making platformers til he drops dead at age 95*

*edit* I think in the past nostalgia was actually a diagnosed illness. Sometimes I wonder...

-Origami Trail (japanese/asian themed, maybe base it on some awesome folklore..like chinese novel Journey West https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West which isn't Japanese originally I guess...but who cares about anything making sense, that's why we are into NES games right....?  right....????)
-Or Trail (binary/computer themed. Instead of dysentery you get a computer virus)
-Oar Trail (boat/sea themed, you travel west across the ocean and get SCURVY instead of dysentery)

I basically have the brain of a 10 year old and this all excites me greatly.

You have OR Trail all wrong. It should be a game where you progress through the life/career of a medical student who becomes a surgeon. You travel along a linear path, encountering patients and outbreaks, and how you deal with the scenarios determines how successful you are.

The pace option from Oregon trail could still be present, and either determine how much work you get done balanced with how risky/dangerously you work, or it could be used to balance leisure to make you happier and less burnt out, vs working/studying harder to get better at the job, while getting burnt out from overwork.

The hunting scenes could be a surgery mini game, or the Dr rushing around to do rounds/see patients as fast/efficiently as possible.

Gaaahhh... You have ruined me!!! I could go on and on now!

Ah Operating Room I getcha now...fun idea! (your patient has died of dysentery.)
I think collectively we have revealed this is a very fertile genre that has perhaps been under explored---it would not be saturated by just one new game.

The collective will of the NES homebrew community is gathering to give a glorious birth to an oregon trail clone! It shall happen. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Polar opposite of that would be Trail of Bodies where you take on the role of a traveling serial killer, where your success is determined by how well you conceal your crimes and the minigames would be related to dealing with the victims and their bodies.

Instead of buying caulk for your wagon, you'd be buying tarps and duct tape.

And there would be some background risk calculations based on making the purchases in the same town where the murder happened, along with some element related to how well you avoid store surveillance footage.

20-35 copies, not an Oregon Trail clone, but a completely different project.

Wow, so rather than read through a gazillion posts, curious how this project is coming along? Or has it already been released? How is it "upgraded/changed" so to speak? Hopefully there's music

The OP is no longer doing this project due to copyright issues. SoleGooseProductions is working on a port with a different theme to avoid those copyright issues. GradualGames is thinking about maybe doing one. Any project is probably a year or four from being finished.

Holy cow, I just realized this very thread was posted like 11 days after I joined Nintendoage. That's epic. This will be the most epic tale of NES homebrew once somebody finishes a clone of this game. SGP, we're all counting on you!

Not a clone, adaptation  !

The new art document for FV is dated to 12-27-16 (thirty odd pages), but on 12-29-16 I suddenly had a different type of project (non-game) take precedence. More on that at some point. Truth be told, had I had a bit more art in hand come March, Family Vacation and not Spook-o'-tron would have gone to Kickstarter. Feelers have been put out for music as well. Someday it will get there...
