Going forward the competition will have two games running at a time.  They are separate leaderboards, with their own points awarded.  You can compete in one or the other, or both.

This appears to trip people up so I'm posting it again:  If you post an updated score please re-use your original post, or create a new one and remove your old score.  That will make my life easier sorting things out.

August Game #1: F-Zero
Rules
  • Goal -> Combined times
  • Bonus Point > Beat 10'45"
  • Select Grand Prix mode
  • Play on standard difficulty
  • Select Queen's League
  • Once you finish the final lap of Track 5, the game will display stats for each track.  Take a picture of each time (you will have about 7 seconds per track)
August Game #2: The Lion King
Rules
  • Goal -> Progress
  • Tiebreaker #1 -> Continues used
  • Tiebreaker #2 -> Lives left
  • Bonus Point -> Beat the game
  • Play on the default settings
  • Play until game over, including use of all continues
  • If you are able to beat the game, keep track of how many continues you used
  • Take the picture of your progress at any point.  I will try to be as granular with progression as possible.  For beating the game, get a pic before you defeat Scar so you can see your remaining lives

The f-ing hippo tails can kiss the fattest part of my ass. Their behavior is utter crap, both in terms of knowing when you can grab them and when to release them. And, of course, the designers said "You know what? Let's put instant-death pits right below the hippo tails. Because...you know...we're assholes like that!" Was this supposed to be a game for kids? I'd like to know how many kids of the day were actually able to beat Stage 2.

Otherwise, the game has some promise. Too bad most folks will never see the rest of it.

I think I've sort of figured out the trick to the hippo tails (and any other "swinging" object). You don't want to aim for the tail/object itself (Why would you? That's only logical, right?) but just a few pixels to whichever side you're coming from.

But if you thought Stage 2 was hair-pulling, just wait until you reach Stage 5. Not only do you have to contend with the typical stage hazards but now there are random falling rocks that will pound you if you stand still (and sometimes, they'll get you anyway). There's a part where you're chased by an insta-kill boulder and more ledge-swinging over instant-death pits. And you can't even take your time because of aforementioned falling rocks. That's as far as I've gotten thus far. Simba's Exile at the ledge swinging pits just past the first checkpoint.

This game is relentless. What kind of sadists program something like this?

It took me a long time to figure out the swinging tails too. What a stupid part of the game. I had the most trouble with riding the ostrich. I really had no idea why I was dieing every single time I tried a double jump. After level two it gets easier until level 5. It sounds like you and me are at the same point. Stupid instadeath boulders

Good job!
Thanks! The game isn't really that long but has some stupidly frustrating parts.

List of parts I had trouble with
-Stupid ostrich riding. (Basically the snes version of the turbo tunnel)
-Swinging on hippo tails (Pixel perfect jumps on the right or left edge not the middle like you'd expect.) Turns out all the ledges are like that and once you figure that out the ledge grabs get better
-The three hyenas at the end of the third level are the worst!
-Simbas exile! The first insta death boulder is a bitch and you need to roll through the porcupine to get through. To "roll" you need to press the opposite way you are running. Took a while to figure that out.
-Hakuna Matata. The log climb up the waterfall is so ridicuously stupid. It took me a solid 5 minutes of jumping to finally make it to the top
-The bats during the stone boat lava ride killed me way more times than I like to admit.

Atleast the stampede level is easy. If you stand in a certain spot to the left 90% of stuff misses you and you can wait out the whole level. The only other easy part was the scar fight.

That game is brutal!

My experience with Lion King is that the Genesis version is way better.

I don't own Lion King but I really want to compete this month... to both games.

Edit: Wait... how do I know this? Do I actually have the SNES version? I remember comparing them a few years ago.   God damn, I'm clueless sometimes.

On emulators, I noticed that playing Lion King on ZSNES has been giving me occasional issues with dropped frames. I have a beefy computer and have never experienced framerate issues with any other games on the ZSNES. Just kinda weird and a little annoying.

Well, I made it to the end "boss" of Stage 8 ("Be Prepared"), in as much as you can call it a boss. From what I understand, you're supposed to just dodge rocks until all the lava fountains are plugged up. Other than that, I can't seem to tell if there's actually any pattern to the way the rocks fall and they fall too fast to possibly dodge.

The whole of Stage 8 was probably the worst of all (with the possible exception of the waterfall climb in Stage 6). Fuck the bats. Seriously. Fuck 'em. I wonder if lions have this much trouble with bats in the real world.

This whole game is a test of patience. And sometimes even patience isn't enough.
