The 8Bitdo controllers really are the perfect match for this system. I have a set for the AVS and for my SNES, and they are just fantastic controllers.

I had an 8bitdo drop connection the other day while I was playing Contra and I watched helpless as my character walked off into a pit like ten times before the controllers resynced. I had Konami code activated but still I lost a ton of stock. It's like Dpad right was pressed the entire time. That's just game-breaking...

We have one wifi connection in our house and all the 2.4Ghz wireless devices and games systems in the house were shut off save for the laptop I had the AVS plugged into and the 8bitdo controller. Much as I love these 8bitdo controllers, how can I trust it won't happen again?

I'm not gonna worry about it unless it happens again. Could just be that once in a blue moon you experience a hickup or two. I'm honestly not sure if it's the 8bitdo controller or the reciever or interferance from neighboring wifi that caused it.

I also downgraded to older beta firmware in my second 80bitdo NES receiver so that I could use the A+B buttons on the controller instead of B+Y. I mention this because there have been a few minor fixes applied to the controllers since they got remapped, and added support for SNES receiver which shares the same hardware internally. Buttons map to A+B and turbo function maps to X+Y under the old beta firmware. Yeah I'm one of those "weirdos" who prefers the VC style layout that nintendo uses with the Classic Controllers.

I prefer Y+B over A+B on SNES-style controllers myself. It's just easier and more comfortable to hold Y and press B for running jumps in SMB than it is to hold B and press A. The tip of your thumb and your knuckle rest perfectly on Y and B in a neutral position. I had some trepidation over the button mapping on the 8BitDO controllers, so I haven't yet picked up the wireless adapter. I think I'll grab one now.

Slightly related....The NES Dogbone controller feels so good in the hand, but the angle of the B and A buttons is wrong to me. I have been using one of late though.

NES Dogbone and DMG Gameboy, GBA, DS (GBA mode), and Virtual console (Classic / Pro controllers) can't all be wrong though. I'm sure Nintendo had a good reason for designing it that way. A Dogbone or DMG with A+B buttons tilted the other way would just look and feel really wierd IMO.

Thanks for the heads up; will flash this firmware later. The always NTSC in menus is a good idea IMO.

Didn't work.

Though it plays for a few seconds longer. So whatever was done, do it more.

Nope.

My only green strip game is Tetris, and I did get that to work.

Xexyz just locks up after a few seconds. Have to power cycle the AVS.

I understand the sentiment and at least part of the reasoning but don't know that I agree.  Sure, the bulk of sales have gone to folks who have/use NTSC as their standard format, but not everybody who's bought one falls into this category.  With it being locked to the NTSC standard in the menus, I have to wonder how this will affect folks in PAL regions.  As not all NTSC TVs will support a PAL signal, shouldn't the opposite be true, potentially leaving some PAL owners working blind?  If this is (potentially) the case, I'm semi-surprised that there's not a way to force the system to boot into PAL mode, since resetting the system to defaults will result in NTSC menus and, to the best of my knowledge, systems going to PAL countries aren't getting pulled pre-shipment and set to PAL before they go out the door.

I still think that there should be a semi-complicated button press to confirm PAL/NTSC setting changes, like do the Konami code or something to confirm.  If you can't see it, it will revert to the original setting, but if you can, hammer out the code and lock in the new setting.

Hey gang, I am new here and I don't know where else to post this question.

I have seen a lot of talk about the USB port breaking on the AVS. I got one if the early shipments, so no reinforcement has been performed on my console. Is it absolutely necessary to open the console and apply some epoxy or some other means of reinforcement? I would rather not risk tampering with it, but if it's going to break sooner or later I might try to prevent it.

Any recommendations on how to proceed?

The USB port broke on my AVS pretty quick. Happened after about a week of light use. Mine actually broke off completely and was rattling around on the inside. Unfortunately, there was not much I could do to prevent it. I had only used the AVS five times total.

...Except you could have reinforced it like bunnyboy showed in pictures. Or used epoxy like many of us did. It just needs a little extra support to fight lifting when inserting the plug.

Going strong here and I have no fears that it will be damaged as I have removed and replugged many times moving between rooms, testing, and travelling.

That's not a very good response to someone that had a new product break. Almost as if it was his fault. We shouldn't have to research before using our product for pictures bunny or others put out to prevent breakage. I couldn't even find these pictures you speak of after searching through NA or Retrousb and I have no plans on opening up my system to use epoxy/hot glue and/or other cheap rigging.

I haven't used my system since these reports of broken ports started surfacing because I'll just wait for his reinforcement part to be ready. I hope it's soon because It's been discouraging not wanting to play/move the unit in fear of snapping off ports.

Side question. Is there going to be a Christmas Cart this year? It's usually available starting Halloween isn's it? I was waiting to order the launch series set with the Xmas cart.

Did you get a more recent one? He may have already reinforced it (with screws rather than the part.)

No, I was one of the first ones.

Got mine on Sept 16th. Played it the first week. Saw posts of usb ports breaking and bunny talking about replacement pin connectors and reinforcement part so I haven't touched it. I plan on using it in more than one location so I'd rather not risk it.

I've used mine excessively in Florida, flew it to Portland, used it excessively there in numerous locations. Flew back to Florida, and have used it a lot here again.

Not to try to persuade you to use yours, but the amount of them that have broken off has been really low compared to how many have shipped.

I'm not even sure if a PAL set exists that cannot sync to 60Hz over HDMI. Are PAL region BluRay releases still crippled with 25/50Hz transfers the way DVDs were?

I can't say with 100% certainty as I don't own or have access to one, but poking around online, it seems that PAL BluRay discs are tied to the 50Hz standard the way their DVDs, VHS tapes, etc. were.  I know that a lot of European TVs will run whatever you throw at them, but so will a lot of US sets (it's just not documented).  However, as in the US, there are also some sets that will only display the local, native signal and, as such, would end up having serious issues with the AVS being permanently locked into NTSC mode, even if it's just the menus.  I haven't written the support email, so I doubt my suggestion will be read (and most likely never implemented), but it would be great to see the AVS firmware tweaked to allow it to be reset to defaults in either NTSC or PAL mode to guarantee compatibility across all TVs.

There isn't much progress to be made. The replacement adapters just need to be made.

I found I have access to a 3D printer. I wonder if the design of the USB power port brace can be posted.
