I guess I was a dank collector I had earthbound, and love Zelda and mega man. But recently decided I'd rather have the everdrive and a couple cib games i love. Also my priorities have changed so I'm taking my snes collection and getting rid of it since my super everdrive has all of them anyway.

I had trouble selling an extra IZEK 1500 and game in a group because nobody knew what it was! lol

I actually think of you as the exertainment guy Lol

Hipsters unite!

Mario and Mega Man are way too mainstream.  It is all about the obscure stuff that these meatheads never heard of.

Don't let those jock bullies make fun of collecting unique stuff.  Stay weird.

Well it is pretty obvious, people want to buy them to "show off" and have only "good" games in their collection. I completely can understand it. To also make it even more easy to understand, the prices of games have shot up. So people only want to buy good games and pass on the lesser known stuff because they don't know if they will like it. Believe it or not, a lot of people don't check out every game they buy on youtube before they buy it. But people have definitely heard of the big titles and that's what draws them. I would also bet some of those "dank collectors" don't even own modern systems.

Lot's of changings and the unfolding of the retro market evolution clearly paints a very easy picture. Not sure it needed to be thought so deeply about.

I don't know if I'm a dank collector or not. Because on one end, I only collect for one mainstream series (Zelda) but on the other end, I have a complete US Zelda NFR set and almost a complete EUR Zelda NFR set, plus Zelda test cart, etc. so I hope that redeems myself. My problem with going for a full set is not that I don't want to but rather requires a lot of time hunting, which I just don't have unfortunately.

One thing I will say though. I find it kind of funny whenever on places like Reddit somebody posts "look what I found at my local store today" and it's a picture of a pokemon yellow cartridge and the post has like 700 upvotes. But then again, I think that it's an entirely different audience on those websites so I guess it makes sense.

Dank collectors spend hours reading wikpedia articles highlighting the general information, never questioning the hype or being critical of the genuinely good games.

So whats up w em all? It's strange to me to see how these collecting scenes have evolved from full sets, unlicensed, bootlegs, region specific, homebrew/repro, etc to such a level high level of dank collectors. Its confusing to me because all of these dank ass games (Mega Man, Zelda, Mario, even Earthbound) are so easily played and experienced legally for like $5 from Nintendo. I get it. People wana play NIntendo's. But to collect a fuckton of dank Nintendo games just to play them on a Nintendo just doesnt make sense.

When I lurked these forums in 2012 and joined in 2013, obscurity collectors ran wild. Whether it would be collecting every GameBoy Color color to hundreds of JP carts, going for after these daunting tasks was encouraged and supported. So, what happened?

From what I seen, these dank collectors chastise those who go for sets, criticising them for "buying that shovelware/crap", or "why would you buy 20 GameBoys? You cant play them all", and "Who would pay that much for such a bad (actually rare) game?". So what happens now is, the dank collectors chase all the creative collectors back into the shadows. Websites like these were made to make these kind of people for comfortable sharing their collections and spreading information of the obscure onto the web.

Probably the most telling trait of a dank collector is their retreat from the "hobby" as fast as the come. They sell their dank collections to other dank collectors and move on. Things like back story, heritage, the culture of gaming are not important to the dank collectors. Dont get me wrong, being a dank collector is cool. Mega Man is a great series. Mario is my man. Zelda bores me but I fuck w first party titles as much as the next guy. It just gets to me seeing dank collectors coming at people who care collecting whatever they want.

Each to their own mate. if someone just wants to be a "dank collector" what is stopping them? you?

Interesting.... I didn't know "only collecting power titles" was a thing. I figured Mega Man, SMB 3, and Zelda were hella popular right now because they are awesome games. People who wanted to play Mega Man got their copies years ago so I'm not surprised if it's hard to find.

Personally, I'll collect any NES game ever. If it happens to be s popular game, fine. If it happens to be a great game to play, even better!! If it's a shitty game, that's fine too, at least it says Nintendo on it.

Collecting certain titles or series just because "they're so hot right now" IS lame. But over using the term "dank" and trying to get it noticed as the newest and best buzzword in classic video gaming just to hate on others in your own community is also lame.

Maybe one day all those people will sell, as you said, and you can pick up all the dank gems you've always wanted.

I owned a Game Gear as a kid, when most people didn't know what they looked like. I still defend that it's a better console than the GB or GBC, despite it's appetite for batteries, and I spent years tracking down CIBs of all my childhood favs, like Putt & Putter, Tails Adventure, Sonic Labyrinth, and Wimbledon Tennis.

I'm dank as F.
Yeah that's right.
As a matter of fact, I don't see why you'd need to have more than one Game Boy Color, because other people want one too! Pick your favorite color and go with that, don't horde a bunch of other GBCs just to have them collect dust.

I don't see how collecting complete sets is 'creative' at all. Heh! If your collection consists of only games you like, it tells me a lot about you and it's a cool collection. If that includes Sachen games, even cooler! But if your collection is complete including all the Barbie games and all the variants and crap, it tells me nothing about you except you're hopelessly OCD. Your collection is no longer personalized, it's exactly the same as that other guy who has a complete set. And worse, it contains a bevy of games you'll never play, games that someone else wants from their childhood very, very badly.

The reason for the increase in danktitude is scarcity and expense. And storage space. It's not as easy to go out and grab an Earthbound anymore. Modern collectors have to draw the line somewhere, or go bankrupt. Games and systems don't grow on trees and there simply aren't enough games for every special little snowflake to have complete sets.

Dankity dank!

Lol Poe's Law dude

But to expand, a dank collector would have no problem spending big money on a mint zelda game and then critize someone who dropped that same coin on say an NES testing unit. Because those testing unitd arent dank. Idk, not that Im saying I put any thought to this or that Im not a hypocrit, I just thought I'd point it out so that next time a long time collector comes out of the woodwork the dank collectors can see their own ignorance to the hobby.
