Hello everyone and welcome to the second half of the 2013 contests.  In case you missed it or are brand new to the site, the past three weeks have been devoted to a tournament featuring 30 of the top players from the first half of 2013.  There was some exciting competition, awesome scores, and great smack talk throughout the course of the tournament.  A big congrats goes out to the participants   Now that the tournament is over, we are starting things all over again with a brand new leaderboard that will determine the participants for the second tournament.  For those of you who missed out on the first tournament, here is your chance to try to make it into the second one and win some fabulous prizes   Let's just say that I think the prizes for tournament two are going to be bigger and better than tournament one.  If you want a shot at some great prizes, give the weekly contests a try   Simple participation every week would probably be enough for you to enter the tournament.  Also, the tournament may not be restricted to 30 people.  The more people who play, the more potential tournament spots that could be available   Now on to the contest.

This week's game is gonna be an arcade classic, Mario Bros. (NOTE: this is NOT Super Mario Bros.  This is the arcade Mario Bros.)  Here are the rules:

  • Play on 1 Player Game A
  • Play until Game Over
  • To get your score, start a new game and take a picture. Your score will be the high score
  • If you roll the score, be sure to take your picture right before you roll the score and right after to prove you past 1 million points
  • No point racking allowed
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Arcade

The contest ends Sunday, 8/4/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

this sounds fun. Do we post here and can we post more than one time to update or score or should we just edit our original post with a new photo?
Ands thats two photos one of the scores reset and one with your highscore?

Yes, you post your score here. You can post all the times you want to, but when posting an additional score, either edit your first score with the new one, or make a new post and edit your previous score so it is not confusing when compiling score (deleting it completely is a good solution).

It is just one picture. Do your score until game over, start a new one and you highscore will be displayed. Take the picture here.

Definitely edit your original post.

Personally, I like players to make a new post for a new score and delete their previous score. This way, we don't need to check all the previous posts to see the fresh scores of everyone.

And with that, I guess I'll take the honor of posting the first score of the 2nd half. I have only ever played this for testing purposes but I know it's up my alley. I expect to see some outrageous scores for this one (but really, a person could say that every week!)

I still don't like ROMs, but this will be the first of three straight ROM weeks for me. Just like Joust, I have Mario Bros. for the 7800 but not for the NES, but I felt the transition to this game was a lot smoother. I played this a few times last week when I was taking a break from Life Force and I probably went twice as far as I've ever done in the past, so I'm expecting some insane scores this week from everyone.

I also have the same question Krunch did, is it Game A we're supposed to use? I'm unfamiliar with this version so I want to make sure I've been choosing the correct option.

I'm excited to be able to join back in these. I played one game last tourney, and then started moving/packing and couldn't do any more.

As long as there's no differences from the NES version (easier difficulty, different speed, etc.) then the Super Mario Advance version should be fine.

there is no difficulty settings as for speed, if you guys hold the b button can you run faster?? Also there is a bonus stage is that in the original. You just have to collect 6 or 8 coins in a certain amount of time

In the NES version, holding down B won't make you run faster.  If you can do that in the Super Mario Advance version, unfortunately we won't be able to allow it since the run feature could give someone an advantage over the NES version.

Something tells me that the Super Mario Advance version is not identical.

I dont think we should use the super mario advance version... mostly the game is very much the same but there are a few differences. The main difference is you can only earn one extra life after you get to 20k points in the nes version but in the advance version you can get a free life for each perfect you get in each bonus stage. If the person playing the gba version is good at those bonus stages they would have a real advantage over the other players.

That, and the fact that it doesn't even look like the original is way enough to forbid this version.

Looking at Russlyman picture, there's no pipes in the upper part of the level?

I think there's enough differences from the NES version and the Super Mario Advance version to make it forbidden to use Super Mario Advance for Mario Bros.

I know it's unlikely but just a heads up if anyone gets close to 1 million points you may want to take a pic while you play cause once you pass 999999 the ticker resets
