Before and after dungeon exits progress video 2-16-14:

Intro and pre-alpha gameplay videos 12-30-13:

Hi everyone, we've begun development of a new title. This one will be an adventure game inspired by Crystalis, Startropics, Zelda, and others. Here's a video of what we have so far:

The germinal idea of this game was created when I was about 11. I attempted to create it when I was a teenager several times, but lacked the discipline to see it through. Now, I have both discipline and confidence built from one successful project, and this game will get finished unless I die first.

The central gameplay mechanic involves the main hero and her bird, an owl. The owl will learn new techniques throughout the game and may be able to do things like fetch keys, carry the hero across a ravine, etc. The first technique the owl has is to simply rush enemies and return to the hero. The hero's name is Adlanniel.

I just noticed NA's guidelines about youtube videos. However, I think this thread is appropriate as I'm announcing a new project and would like to maintain this thread for further announcements about the project's progress. Thanks in advance to the moderators

You need to add a bit of an explanation and/or pictures to your OP.  Just so the thread is useful without the youtube link.

Look forward to the new project!

Awesome, are you using 8x16 sprites? Not too many games have done that, so that makes me happy.

Graphics look great man. Owl chasing you looks like it's programmed really well too. Can't wait to see the progress!

Looks very promising.

The owl mechanic is pretty cool. I've been waiting for another NES RPG.

That was the first thing I noticed. The NES era never used sprites this large in RPG's.

Being that its an action RPG I'm definitely interested in this. Keep it up.

Thanks guys. I'm using 8x8 sprites at the moment. I'll tell Laurie you liked the graphics =D.

I'd call the genre of this game action-adventure. There won't be any leveling up as in an RPG, it'll be much more like Startropics or Zelda where you have a few key items and skills to help you out and some kind of life meter, probably hearts for the nostalgia factor Ironically, when I tried to make this game as a teenager, it was an RPG at the time. You can look it up, I think one of my early demos is still available as a zip file on a QBasic site somewhere. You can run it in DOSBox

With the learned Owl techs, will there be one(probably at the end or so) where you take control of the Owl to enter small spaces that the player cannot? like for example there could be a part where it flies in a window to open a sealed door on other side or something.

Looks really promising, but I can't shake the feeling I am seeing the main characters snatch when she walks toward the bottom of the screen!
