Original Thread:

I've postponed on hyping this up until now as I wanted to make sure we had a tentative date/timeframe and that everything was lined up. We have a pretty epic project going to Kickstarter this July. It's a combination of a book release and a new physical NES Homebrew RPG that is in the works.

The book is titled "The Complete NES - Officially Licensed US Releases". The idea behind this stemmed from there not being a NES collector's guide with exactly what I wanted. It has since morphed into something pretty amazing and special. Basically it will have the box art, screen shot, release year, publisher and a brief summary on each NES game, along with 3 check boxes so you can mark off if you have the cart, instructions, or box. I am doing a really nice hardcover version with full color and also a small pocket-sized paperback version to allow the ability to take on game hunts.

Here is where things get crazy. The ever insane proprietor of Sly Dog Studios, Roth, has come up with an amazing NES homebrew game to go along with this book release! It will be called "Jeffrey Wittenhagen's Black Box Challenge". It will be Sly Dog Studio's first RPG game, with the goal of collecting every NES Black Box game. He has a ton of awesome ideas and, as Roth always does, it will revolutionize what you know about what NES RPGs can do. We will offer cart only, CIB and a couple cool limited options as well.

Just to make this an even more special event, Joe Simko, aka the artist behind the re-release of the Garbage Pail Kids line, is going to be doing the artwork for the book's cover and providing his own custom NES artwork too!

We are going to be taking this to Kickstarter in July and actually unveiling the full cover of the book at a panel at TooManyGames at the end of June! In the Kickstarter, I will add in stretch goals, that if met, I will add in sections for US Unlicensed and unique PAL releases into the book. I also have another stretch goal that will greenlight my next book, for Homebrew Games with everyone being able to preorder at a cheaper price.  Also, if we are funded, Joe Simko will do a variant cover for a NES CIB perk for the campaign, which will definintely be limited and numbered only through Kickstarter along with other crazy tiers.

I figure this thread will mainly cover updates to the new game, which is why it is in the brewery, however if anyone has questions on the Kickstarter or Book, we can talk about that too. I figure this is the best place to see what people want with both the game and the campaign. There will be multiple aspects to this campaign and game that will be revealed as time goes on and this is where we will post our updates.

Change: The Kickstarter is going live June 26th around 3pm NA time.

Badass! One piece of advice - don't offer 10,000,000 different tiers on kickstarter. Give people options, but keep it simple. You don't want a $22 tier, a $27 tier, a $35 tier, a $40 tier, etc.

Yeah, we aren't going to get too crazy, however with 2 book options, 2 game options and artwork, we will have to have some combo tiers that will add to the amount of total tiers. It is kind of unavoidable from a logical standpoint.

I was told by others who have had successfult kickstarter campaigns that having a combo tier is much easier to keep track of than having addons, as you won't have to rely on hundreds of e-mails or messages for clarification.

Sounds like a Digital press book just for the NES. You should get with Braveheart and expand it to be a checklist for all variants of each release. Also should have info like maps and posters to check off. I think we all know what was released, but not the variants or what maps/posters.

Just my two cents.

Very excited for the game. I love RPG's!

Down to the last 2 Sega Game Gear games I need for the CIB USA set. What I will pay for CIB:

Fantastic Dizzy -$300 & Sports Illustrated -$300

I've been working on the book for a couple years now and talked with Braveheart when I began working on it. Basically, there are so many variants that it would fill 20 books! Lol. That being said, if there is enough demand, I will make it for sure. It just wasn't possible to include it in this one

If anyone is LOOKING for certain repro/homebrews, I have a running repro company thread going as well as a lot of extras myself which include Limited Editions as well.  I'm also free to help answer questions and point people in the right direction so never hesitate to ask!  Here is the current list of repro companies.  Please let me know if I need to update it:

You can count me in on the game for sure. If the book included variants, I would definitely be in on that as well. Good luck with your Kickstarter! I see it going very well for you guys.

Thanks everyone!

So here's how I see any type of major content additions for the book. If anyone wants variants, or anything else special that will require a ton more work and research, it can definitely happen. However, if you aren't willing to support the book side, unless something specific isn't going in it that isn't in the current scope of the book, that is actually a pretty selfish standpoint as adding each new thing takes a ton of time and resources. How you can make it happen though is that I am doing stretch goals for the book and game separately. So if enough people back the book, there will be stretch goals in place so things such as unlicensed, PAL exclusives, Variants, Homebrew, etc can be added in. So variants will now definitely be a stretch goal on the book side!

Otherwise, who's to say, that after tons of work, research and effort that anyone else would buy it or that it would be worth all that extra time?

The kickstarter will encompass both the book and the game! There will be combo tiers and add ons for the non-limited items so people can get whatever they want, in any combination.

Also, we are not "pre-printing" or "buying in bulk". We are budgeting the entire project so that everyone who wants a copy of any product has the opportunity to get it. So you won't be paying for us to stockpile up extras or anything.

Another cool thing is I am not charging extra so I can "buy the license to the game".  That means by supporting the project you are: directly supporting me as the writer when you buy the book, directly supporting Rob as the game developer when you buy the game and directly supporting Joe as the artist when you buy any of his art pieces.

Finally, a portion of the profits is going to charity. Cowlitz Gamers for Kids has been thrown around, however we are going to expand that to another charity as well. This does rely on us actually having a successful campaign though...

Pricing hasn't been finalized but we are shooting for as inexpensive as possible while still compensating people for their hard work at a competative rate. Basically gotta cover the material costs, kickstarter fees and taxes. I'm hoping everyone will think the prices are fair.

So I've decided that not only will I will be unveiling the book cover at TooManyGames during my panel....but during that panel the Kickstarter will go live! I think it would be cool if it was an epic event where we accomplished a goal or something! Any thoughts?

The Panel will be that Sunday during the convention at 1:30 NA time. I will be sure to update again before that of course but this way people can make sure they can get ahold of the LEs if they want as they will only be released there and in limited quantities.
