I stopped by a few retro game stores after work today and found this in a case of about 200 Super Nintendo games and it was marked at only $10. I literally have never experienced a feeling like I had when I found that game and I'm probably going to be chasing that for the rest of my collecting life, lol.
Anyway, the game is in really good shape not mint but still clean and pretty glossy. I'm guessing the value is around $500? Correct me if I'm wrong.
(If you don't want the story of how it was found and what I went through you can skip this part)
Anyway, so I was browsing through the games at this retro gaming store (I don't really want to say which one) and in one of the stacks I saw the end label for this game which I at first assumed was just regular Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally (I didn't really know at the time what the end labels look like for either game) and there was a sticker over where it says "Speed Racer" so only "Sp" was visible. At this point I was 60% sure it was the rare dual game cart.
I asked one of the guys to pull it out and he did and I saw right away it was the real deal. At this point the owner of the store who is really experienced with games was on the phone so I was hoping to just buy it quick through the younger guy, but he said he didn't work there he was just friends with the owner or something. So I waited for the other guy to get off the phone.
When he was done on the phone I gave him the game and a $20 bill in one exchange and waited for him to write it up. As he was writing it up he was said, "Oh Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally, this game is actually pretty rare I think I've only seen 3 in the 21 years I've been doing this." And I said "Yeah, its pretty tough to find." Then as he was writing the receipt he stopped for a second and said, "Hold on, this is actually the Exertainment Bike Rally and Speed Racer 2 in 1 cart, I've actually never had one of these." Then as he was finishing the receipt and giving me the receipt he kept talking, "Wow, this could be really rare." I really didn't know what to say so I basically just mumbled along in agreement. The whole time it seemed like he was trying to make eye contact, but I resisted.
Finally at the end, when he gave me my change back and the bag with the game. He said something that makes me 95% sure he knows he messed up, "Thanks, who knows you might have a $400 game there." Then I grabbed the bag and left, I was probably damn near running out the door, but I really wasn't even able to think at that point, I just wanted to get in my car and leave immediately.
So I'm pretty sure the guy figured out what he sold me, but I have a lot of respect for the fact that he honored the price on the tag. I think at the end he was testing to see if I knew what I was buying, and my complete lack of social interaction at the end probably gave that away.
