Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  This week's game is bound to be one that not many people have played, but once you give it a go, I think you will enjoy it   What game am I talking about?  I am talking about Mendel Palace by Hudson Soft.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Game Over
  • Play the stages in any order
  • To get your score, continue your game after getting a Game Over and take your picture on the stage select screen
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Puzzle

The contest ends Sunday, 10/13/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

With all the chaos on the last contest, I hadn't even noticed this one was up yet. I have to ask though, why is it that all the puzzle games are more action-y than puzzle-y? IMHO, Solomon's Key was very similar to an action platformer. Just a thought.

I decided to to throw a twist into a few of the puzzle games this year and put some actiony type puzzle games in the genre. While they're more action/platormer than puzzle, Solomon's Key and Mendel Palace have plenty of parts to it that play out like a puzzle (ex. you have to do things in a very specific order to beat a stage).

Yeah, I felt the puzzle aspect a lot late in Solomon's Key. Anyway, it's been fun so far, and here's to another great action-y puzzle game!

Indeed, we had a lot of reaction puzzle in the first half, and now we're into more action-puzzle type. I'm 1 million time better at the latter than the former.

I was looking up youtube videos for this Mendel Palace and came upon this retro commercial.

It looks like fun.  Hopefully I can find some time to play.

Edit for updated score 10/12/13
I might be running out of talent at this point.

I used to think I knew a lot about NES games because of nearly obsessive reading of Nintendo Power.  The fact that this week's game is something I've never heard of before means that I apparently didn't know enough.  I picked this up last week just for the contest.  I haven't played too much yet, but I've had my first "a-ha" moment.  Hopefully I can get some more playing time in soon.

Thanks for playing and posting smick!

It is one of the goal of the contest to make players discover some games, so I'm happy to see that you're enjoying Mendel Palace! Keep up the good work!

Strange enough, when I try to think about the music of Mendel Palace, all I can hear is Palamedes music. Maybe it'll get stuck in my head after a few more play.

I like the contest. Since I've joined the forum I've played when I either had or could get the game for the week.  I just recently noticed that I can look ahead at the contest games so that will help boost my participation.  I've gotten better at Mendel Palace, and I can see myself playing after the contest week is over. Back at it as soon as I get the kids off of the Wii U.

I gotta agree, the music from Palamedes is more memorable to me.

I suppose I'm alone on this then (for now at least).

Palamedes has a good tune as well.  Pity that it gets overused.  I tended to get tired of that song after a few levels.

So true. I ended up playing the megaman ost on a loop as I played. So, is Mendel Palace one of the games that you have a world record for? Any tips for us mere mortals?

Nope.  We're on equal footing on this one.  I have never played this game competitively before.

Off-hand, I can tell that the best tip will be to find as many special tiles as possible.  At a minimum, get all of the stars since you get a bonus for those.  Those roulette tiles also have a 10,000-point space that is definitely worth getting.

Good day every1,

I recently signed in and I already introduced myself in the introduction area.
I am going to participate in this weeks competition.

I had pm contact with bimmy lee and after discussing it with him I have an announcement.

In the area I live in (border of Germany) there has been a game released for the NES what was only produced in Europe.
I have 2 copies of this game and I would like to donate it to this weeks #2 of the competition

The #2 will have to send his adress and it will be shipped. I will take the cost for shipping it.
The only thing I will be asking is a feedback, beacause I am new on this forum.

If the #2 already has it or doesn't want it, it will go to next week competition.

I hope it will be appreciated. See the picture for the game

Wow, I just found a big secret in this game! You can get a 70,000 point bonus on almost every stage in the upper right hand castle. It's the one with those guys who draw on the floor. Let them cover the ENTIRE floor with drawings and the stage will end, giving you the bonus. You can also speed things up by sliding tiles until they become solid (many tiles in this castle behave like this). All that matters is that there are zero moveable tiles on the screen.

I just tried this out and was able to get almost a million points in that castle alone!

While I said it was okay for you to want to donate a game to the weekly competitions, I only ask on thing: why give the prize to second place rather than the first place winner?

He must not want Tom to get it. Only explanation needed.

I kid, I kid. However, It sounds like it's already a competition for second anyway, what with over a mil on Tom's end.
