Hey everyone!  This week's game, and our third challenge from Tom Votava, is going to be Klax.  Here are the rules:

  • This is a low score challenge
  • Default game settings (Drop Meter On, Medium Difficulty, Ramping On)
  • May freely skip levels when the game offers it
  • Warping is allowed
  • Play until Game Over
  • Highest level wins
  • Lowest score breaks ties
  • GENRE: Puzzle

Basically, you want to get as far in the game as possible while keeping your score low.  The contest ends Sunday, 10/7/12 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Good luck everyone and have fun.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

That game is super cool. The low score rule should make it very interesting. Good luck to everyone!

It's not the nineties, but there is still time for Klax!

So I know not everyone is a fan of low score challenges, but there's a method to my madness here. Underneath all of the complicated rules, I just wanted to see how deep you guys can get into this game. Klax has 100 levels, but the game gets HARD real fast, so hard that I don't think anyone has ever beaten the game without a continue. Getting deep into the game will require loads of speed and skill.

Hint: Go for the "X" warp described in Stages 6 and 11!

It's been awhile since I played, but I thought KLAX let you start at higher levels (similar to Tetris)...

I'm assuming for this contest you have to start at Level 0/1 (whatever their nomenclature is)?

From the rules: "May freely skip levels when the game offers it".

At the very beginning, you can choose between stages 1, 6, and 11.  You can start on any level you want. In addition, every 5 levels, you are offered the choice to skip ahead 5 or 10 levels.  You can take whatever choice you want on these screens as well.

There's a catch to this: While skipping ahead does give you the fast track to higher levels, it also earns you automatic bonus points.  Since ties are broken by the lowest score, you may not want to select the higher levels and take the points hit.

This is another reason why I made this a low score challenge.  It adds a bit of strategy to the competition.

OK.  I wasn't sure if the bonus for level skipping was actually meaningful in terms of average points per level.

The playing area in this game is so small it's really frustrating. At least in Tetris if you screw up there's space to recover. Also getting the X warp is almost impossible. I have yet to be able to pull it off.

First step is to actually get far in the game, keeping the score low is the secondary step once you're comfortable getting significantly far in the game.

I did some digging on YouTube and found a couple of nice demonstration videos. These are from the arcade version, but the same strategies apply to the NES.

Be sure to check out the second video in particular, which shows a successful "X" warp, as well as stellar gameplay on the higher levels.

Good luck!

I made it through the "X" on level 11 to get skipped all the way to 56... got wiped out one Klax short of making 57, though.

This game is way more brutal than I remember.

I'll do it again later in the week and get a pic... hopefully I can get further along, though.
The "X" is tough to manage... took a couple of tries to get the right piece combo. Sort of like trying to get perfect Type-B play on Tetris. Doesn't matter how good you are, sometimes the piece combos just won't let it happen.

If you have any GBA signage or kiosk I would be interested. Please send me a PM because I'm only here about once a month now but I'm still VERY interested in large system signage or small playable kiosks related to the GBA.

Crap... Can't add an image from the iPad. Managed to get to level 58 (with the warp from 11 of course). Oh well. Neat challenge, but the low score issue is a bit of a red herring given how hard the game is. Forget the score and just level.
