That looks great! It seems like it needs a frame or two more in the animation, though. High-detail flash drawings just aren't as forgiving as sprites when it comes to the frame requirements.

Thanks Arch! Yeah I'm going to work more on getting everything smoothed out. Right now its running at 30 FPS, with 3 various mouths coming in at every 5 frames. I'm kinda worried, all I've ever worked in is 30 FPS, but alot of people are telling me the standard is 12. After 3 years I'm kinda set in my ways, but I may need to experiment.

All the game tutorials I've seen are 30fps.
It shouldn't really matter, though, with regards to the animation, since as long as you have something every other frame (at 15fps) it should look fluid.

ETA:  also, when you get down to programming the game, look into incorporating the Kongregate APIs.  They seem to offer the most generous revenue sharing, and get a shit-ton of traffic and click-through.

I love the art style man.

Dont go anywhere under 30 FPS. 12 is not a standard. I've built my share of flash games and like to hit the 40-60 mark. Obviously if you have a lot of vector animations happening on screen at the same time, it's going to bog down but make sure to use an FPS Counter in your movie during development so you can monitor the slowdowns and adjust accordingly.

Are you going to use a game engine or go from scratch?

I've actually been meaning to update this. I'm working on walk cycles, and some enemy designs. Blah, the animations are coming along really slow.

I'd like to keep everything at 30Fps I suppose. After years of doing it that way its hard to change even if I was thinking that 12 was more of the standard. Hrmm.. on the programming aspect I'm planning on just having a couple buddies that I use to work in As3 in to help me out.

I have one buddy that was wanting to get into indie game dev. I'm not sure how far things will go with this, but I could see it getting really involved and possibly doing fairly well on the low down.

Awesome. I'm glad to hear that you have a few AS3 developers. I have always wanted to start a game on the side and could never find a good artist. I recently formed a small team here at work and we started on a 16-bit-esque side scrolling shooter whenever we have down time. It's so much work trying to do everything from original assets (music/sound effects, art, etc) but in the end it'll be worth it.

I look forward to playing your game. I loved Castle Crashers and always wanted to make a side scrolling beat em up like that. Your art style is definitely going to put this game over the top if it's programmed correctly.

Nice, I love it.

Something else to keep in mind is that Flash CS5 is going to allow for publishing to the iPhone. We're making our game in the same aspect ratio as that just in case we want to port it over in the future to make a few bucks.

    Hey Ray,

I really like the game you have created thus far! A cowboy theme is really cool. I have some suggestions:

1. I think an awesome boss would be a mechanized prairie dog with two six shooters

2. Another cool boss could be a giant tumbleweed with a cowboy hat that kicks up dust and shit as an attack.

3. I think it would be awesome if the main character could get weapon upgrades like a lasso, revolver, and shotgun. A super powerup could be golden spurs that make him run fast or travel on the wheels. HAHA...

4. Another cool boss could be a giant Native American Chief with a HUGE tomahawk as a weapon. His name "Chief"...

5. One stage could be the main character on a horse jumping over shit and dodging shit like the old school game moon patrol.

6. I think it would be neat if the main character got energy by stopping in a saloon for a pretend beer or screw by one of the locals.

Let me know what you think!?

      Wolf

I just wanted to comment on the "snatch the garter off the whore" minigame....I'm pretty sure that I have that copyrighted from my wedding night actually.

Good thread to jump start!! Honestly it looks awesome. Quit trying to sell off your games and crying in the corner about it. Make this bitch. Put your crazy neighbors in there as end bosses and put some holes in 'em with that six shooter.

You could also put like a moustache wax power up in there that makes him run faster, or some shit, when he gets it. Definitly diggin' the moustache though, I actually grew out a handlebar moustache cause my dad has one and I wanted a side by side photo. I'll post a pic when I find it.

I'm for reals this time! I spent some time messing with the walk cycle animation and I'm trying to get it all down. I suck super hardcore at walk run cycles, so shoot me some feedback.

Which is a better starting point? The top or bottom?

Check out my SWF file

I think you should go for some Scooby-Doo/Charlie Brown style dynamism and just make a dust cloud below the knee to show that he's running.

I'm learning as I go. After ALL day of goofin' it looks a little better. I'm still going to add the details to the legs and what not, but I just needed some easy filler colors to learn with. Blah!

Check out my SWF file

I'm trying to get a legit run cycle down Arch. I'm learning a little here and there about how stuff works too as I look up instructional videos... so it's a win/win I reckon.
