I have to be the worst Tetris player ever. It's apparent. I can't crack 30k. Ugh. I need to look up some tips or something.

Man, I'm getting crushed already. Years ago, I could hit the 400k range when I played almost daily. I doubt there's any chance of me getting back to that in the next day or two.

Edit, new score: 106,800

Well, it's a miracle, and I guess I'm a wizard, too, now, albeit the lowliest of wizards. Six digits. Big deal for me after playing a bunch this week. Shatters my previous ~66k.

Tetris Tuesday score

At first I was thinking man I'll kick some butt at this.  Obviously I haven't played Tetris in awhile lol.

2nd attempt went better!  Still a lot of room for improvement obviously.

Played for a couple of hours last night. I got my high score when I started on level 6... what is the benefit to starting at a faster/slower level?

Since this is a high score contest, the best scores will come when starting at Level 9.  That's the most points you can get per lines at the start and you will stay on Level 9 until you get to 100 lines, so there's lots of time to rack up points before the even faster levels.

Points aquired are based on:

(1) current level -- a line or combo is worth more, the higher the level

(2) number of lines cleared in a combo -- a tetris (i.e. 4 lines cleared at once) is worth considerably more than a single line

I was actually wondering the same thing myself the other day. I've always just started on Level 0 in the past and never thought anything of it. The only odd thing was that it seemed like my scores ended up about the same no matter which Level I chose.

I started on level 9 instead of 0 last night and it made a huge difference. My scores went from barely making participation to around 130k. Still knocking the rust off, though, so I'd like to do a bit better than that.

I completely forgot you could pick your level up to 9. Been starting on zero every time. I'll try on a higher level tonight.

Thanks for the tips, you guys! Starting off at a higher level definitely seems to up by rate of scoring, but I wash out quicker. I'll have to keep practicing. I think I can at least beat the score I posted before the end of the week.

I got my 100K score starting from level 2. It's hard to start from level 9, but I need to start doing so. Maybe baby steps, though this contest ends in a few days. hmph.

Once you get better at the game, it's actually easier to start at level 9+, since the pace of play is so much steadier for longer.

When you start at a lower level, you are facing a fairly jarring color and speed change ever 10 lines.

At a level 9 start, you get 100 lines of uniform play with no distractions, on top of the dramatically better scoring potential.

Ha, I've been playing off and on this morning/early afternoon, trying the 9. Ugh. It's like I have a big sloshy waterlogged brain. I'm like, what's happening? Sometimes I can last a while. Just gotta keep at it, I reckon.
