If you're only trying for participation then just focus on getting through levels by filling enough screen space and avoiding enemies. Don't worry about any high scoring tricks. It shouldn't be too hard to get 50k. Fast draw using the A button won't net as many points but it's easier to avoid enemies.
On the first level you can start out by moving a few spaces to the right and slow draw a vertical line from bottom to top, and the Qix usually won't touch you. Then you can box in the Qix in the corner with a fast horizontal line. This simple strat can get you over 30k just for the first level.
