For more points try to clear stages by matching all the dice without pressing down.
 

Hmmm, interesting. I thought I was supposed to try to clear the lines fast via the combos.  The thought of trying to clear the dice individually is a bit intimidating, but the first few stages are pretty slow and I was waiting for the next line to appear after big combos fairly often. I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks for the tip, mbd39!

 

Yeah. There's a 50k bonus for every stage you clear without pressing down. After a certain point the perfect clears become impossible and then you have to resort to combos. It's the only way to get a high score.

Ha, straight up, I didn't remember much from the last time we played this game, started playing, and didn't even remember the combo thing. I just went at it individually the whole time.   Ugh, I probably could've saved myself. Might have to give this one another whack before the week's over.

I was soooooo close in 2013.  So friggin close.  Had a lucky board, but I think it's possible.
 

You know, I was playing the other day and tried this, and it occured to me that this is what you must have done in the tourney.  Seems so simple I cant believe I didnt guess what you were doing before.  I might experiment with this strat just to give me that extra edge, but damn Michael's score is a tough one to topple
 

I wanted to avoid doing this because it's kind of a cheap strat and I much prefer the challenge of playing naturally. I got 931k just playing straight. I've even beaten the tournament mode in best of 7 without pausing.

If 18 perfects isn't feasible and we both use the same tricks then it's going to be about who lucks into better scoring opportunities for a slight advantage and who is persistent enough to want to keep trying. For me there is zero challenge until the 16th perfect and getting there takes forever. Probably same for you. It's a real grind whether going for 18 perfects or a slightly better score with 17 perfects.

That 17th perfect is a big leap in difficulty over the first 16, IMO. And you have to start over every time you screw up.

Right now I can't imagine getting 18. But the margin for victory will be razor thin unless someone does.
