^ Damn dude. You must be extremely insane at Contra! I'd love to see some videos.

I've done no death Contra runs in the past (but it's been awhile) but never took the time to master Super C. I still think it is a lot harder than the original, so congratulations if you overcame the difficulty curve!

Haven't been here for a while. For a bit there I took a break from my NES to play catch up on some of my Playstation games, then Christmas came and my attention went towards my new PS2 games. Currently I'm playing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for the PS2, but decided to take a short break from it and reconnected my NES to play some Castlevania. I had a purpose other than just flat out beating it, done that too many times, this time I wanted to beat it without using any of the sub-weapons (dagger, axe, boomerang, holy water, or stopwatch). I beat it twice, using the whip only, if a sub-weapon happened to land in my hands I just ignored it. If I happened to accidentally grab an invisibility potion I just stood where I was until it wore off, if a cross, well, nothing I can do about that, but I avoided this stuff the best I could. I had also planned to get through without getting any wallmeat but forgot during the heat of battle and chowed down when I needed some. I also had attempted to record my game plays using my webcam, and I did, but they didn't come out good, but I did note the time that I had each death.

The stages overall were easy, never felt I was in too much danger of losing any lives, even in stage 4 with all the water, fishmen and bats, I usually lose some lives here, but not at all this time. Only real challenges were against 3 of the bosses, Frankenstein & Igor, Grim Reaper, and Dracula. The first game I struggled with Death, and here before this I thought I'd have more trouble beating Franky and Igor, but did surprisingly well against them, but I ended up using a continue to the Grim Reaper, something I didn't want to do, but hey, you gotta start out bad before you can get good. Second game, the usual 2 bosses gave me a little bit of trouble, but not too much. When I had killed myself (err Simon) is because I only had 1 hit left, no way was I going to beat Drac using just my morning star whip and only 1 hit point, so I jumped, saved myself the trouble and time of losing. Anyway, here's my results:

Castlevania
01/07/09
10th game: Beat Castlevania without using sub-weapons, had 9 deaths, 1 continue used
15:28 - 1st death by the Grim Reaper
16:50 - 2nd death by the Grim Reaper
18:22 - 3rd death by the Grim Reaper
19:58 - 4th death by the Grim Reaper
22:04 - 5th death by the Grim Reaper
24:05 - 6th death by the Grim Reaper (continue)
27:50 - 7th death by the Grim Reaper
32:55 - 8th death by Dracula's 2nd form
35:09 - 9th death by Dracula's 2nd form
01/07/09
11th game: Beat Castlevania without using sub-weapons, had 4 deaths, score 160420
10:46 - 1st death by Frankenstein
15:38 - 2nd death by the Grim Reaper
17:19 - 3rd death by the Grim Reaper
20:32 - 4th death by suicide off Drac's Clock Tower

Oh, by me saying 10th game, or 11th game, this refers to how many times I've beaten the game since keeping detailed logs on my game accomplishments, starting from August 12th, 2002, though I've beaten Castlevania far more times than 11 if counting the many times I'd done so prior to that date.

NES games beaten in 2009:  1

 1. Gargoyles Quest II

I snapped a pic of the end screen. It's one of my favorite NES games, but it's probably 10 years ago since I last beat it.

I beat Monster Party last night. If you ever give it a run, dont be thrown off my the sloppy controls. You get used to them pretty fast and once you figure out how to get health it becomes very playable.

Much of the game is rather easy using just the whip, but there are several spots which I typically have trouble with. The first dangerous spot in the game for me are the crushing devices in the 2nd stage, I hate going through that part of the stage, always fearful that my timing will be off, and instant death, but haven't gotten killed by them yet, so that's good, but I have had it happen before. The entire first section of stage 4, the underground lake, usually I'd die here at least once in the past, well not this time, never lost a life in this area during my no sub-weapon playthrus, just gotta keep moving, from the moment Simon lands in this stage, no hesitation. Actually, never lost a single life at all until I at least get to Franky & Igor, sometimes I lost against them, but they have become easier. But the mother of all challenges is beating the Grim Reaper with just the whip, sometimes I can do it rather easily, and then other times I fail terribly, but many of the battles against him I can at least last a while, nearly beating him every time, dodging, jumping, ducking and whipping his sickles, and attacking him when I have an opening, all the while trying to keep my nerves in check, lest I mess up, he's a tough one, but rather fun to take on, kinda like the Mike Tyson of Castlevania. Probably the most irritating foe in this game to me are the giant bats that hover around the clock tower bridge, most of the time you can just keep on moving, they don't usually react to swoop down on you right away, so you can make it to the next section usually without taking any damage. But, every so often they switch up their attack patterns, attacking me right after I passed by them and am making a jump to the next platform, which results in me getting knocked down to my doom. F'in can't stand those big bats, would like to take a bat to them. Dracula usually only kills me if I get to him without enough health, beating his 2nd form using only the whip kinda requires you to have full health to survive, or some luck. I still need to improve, try to get through losing less lives, particularly on the Grim Reaper.

Yesterday I beat Monster in my Pocket and today I beat Life Force w/ no continues. I will try to post in this forum more this year!

I've done no death runs of both Contra and Super C but I found it much more difficult to accomplish for Super C.

What are the odds? I beat this game on the same night! Somehow both of us were asking ourselves why we are still playing this? and then glad it only has 60 levels not 99 like the gameboy version =) Its like when you look up at the moon and wonder how many other people are staring at the moon that same instant. I used to have Bugs Bunny for GB and loved it so I decided to give this one a whirl. The one thing I found very annoying I dont recall from the GB version is the momentum when you full that pushes you forward in the direction you fell! ugh

I also beat Demon Sword tonight. Fun / easy / short little game.
Hooray me!

That is pretty funny Herbalist. This has me picturing the scene in An American Tale when they are singing that "Somewhere out there" song except the mice are playing nintendo.

I'd never played the game before, so I just popped it in and it was enough fun to keep playing until the end.

17th game: Beat Castlevania without picking up any sub-weapons, or wallmeat, or invisibility potions or cross, with 2 deaths (1st against the Grim Reaper, 2nd against Dracula's 2nd form), score 155.950

For a couple days, the 7th and 8th, I attempted to beat Castlevania without using any subweapons or wallmeat, and I was able to beat it more than a handful of time without using any of the subweapons, or wallmeat, but wasn't really satisfied with that, I knew I could do better.

Early morning the 10th, I played this for over 6 hours straight (from 2am something to 8am something), probably around 30 tries I attempted to beat it, but this time no only just not using the subweapons, but not collecting any subweapons at all (really difficult to do with them wanting to give you so many all the time), also no meat, but I also gave myself a 3 death limit, any more than that and I reset the game, and if I accidentally picked up a subweapon I reset the game.

On my last try, when I was about to call it quits due to fatigue, I did it as I wanted to, beat Castlevania without picking up any subweapons, or wallmeat, also didn't grab a single invisibility potion or cross either, and I had only 2 deaths, the mandatory 1st death against the Grim Reaper (gotta have at least one death against Death himself, otherwise he's not happy), and the 2nd death against Dracula due to not having enough health to start with to outlast his 2nd form (its typical for me to lose at least one life this way).

I watched a vid on Youtube of someone getting through Castlevania without getting hit, after having watched that it inspired me to go try my no subweapon, no meat challenge since its something I've always been wanting to do. I'm also thinking of trying for a no hit game, but playing the game with everything normally available, no limits on anything. Heck, the furthest I ever got while tackling my challenge without getting hit was to Frankenstein & Igor, pretty damn good I think to get that far without taking it a hit using the whip only.

No way, I beat the first one in the "Special Game" and then went to GameFAQs to see how many rounds there were.  There's 30!!!  That essentially doubles the length of the game and I'm not going all that extra way.  If I want to beat 50-100 titles this year I'm not going to have time to thoroughly destroy each game.  Plus it wasn't really that much fun to me...

There's where the game's challenge (and the real fun) finally begins. Can't say you've beaten that game without beating the special stages.

Of course it's a bit tough to decide when you call a game beaten or not. But I think in this case these special stages are a big part of the game. Although, yeah Irem decided to call these stages bonus stages.

Hmm, there should be a separate topic about this stuff.

Haven't had much time to play since the turn of the new year, but I decided to beat Super Mario Bros again the other day. Good times.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I won the second season of my franchise TSB League with my buddies. I was the Cleveland Browns and I took down my friend in the Super Bowl, who was the 11-0 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Another game busted yesterday. Deja Vu. I always enjoyed those types of games. Has a pretty decent ending too. Too bad it took me some 13 years to beat it. All well, moving on to Adventures of Dino Riki.

Ghosts and Goblins - Both Quests! Inspired by Marks gaming accomplishment thread, I beat the first quest last Friday. I went away to Toronto for the weekend and had been thinking of G&Gs a lot. Today I spent a solid 2 hours and went through both 'rounds'. I think other people should attempt this game as well- a solid challenge but definitely doable. The two most important skills I thought, was 1) the ability to throw two consecutive weapons quickly and 2) to jump away and fire at several enemies. Sorry for the crap picture.

I like the 'you feel strongth welling in your body' misprint at the end

I was mortified when it said 'Challenge Again!' and then very relieved when the game over screen came on.

Well this has been a good day for me for this thread. Completed ghosts and goblins earlier and finally took down Adventure Island this evening! This time I spent the most time in level 8-4 which I had never been. I somehow managed to pass 8-3 on my first try! It was a complete fluke that the jumping sequence worked out at the end. I still think 8-2 is the hardest level. I really like this game and I'm extremely happy I finally beat it.

Dr. Morbis you are incredible. I can't imagine completing that game with no continues and the no death until 8-2 part is equally insane.  If you have any time you should consider submitting a speed run. Even with several deaths I can't see anyone beating you. Ever considered it?
