This one was from a NARC, I really don't like NARC.

If you have any GBA signage or kiosk I would be interested. Please send me a PM because I'm only here about once a month now but I'm still VERY interested in large system signage or small playable kiosks related to the GBA.

Thanks for the simple tutorial, although I kinda cheated and just dropped the eprom on the FC cart using the wiring guide- After finding and reading the mask rom pinouts, It's a bit obvious

I don't own any FF Famicom carts, so this is the only way to successfully do it.

Hm.. out of curiosity, I was playing through FF3 translated rom the other day as I hadn't played the beginning of the game translated before...
When you guys make repros, are you using Final Fantasy III (Japan) [En by A.W.Jackson+Neill Corlett+SoM2Freak v1.1] with its 10 page long "don't sell this, don't use this in some emulator, etc" credits during the crystal opening, or for sake of a nicer repro, is there one with nicer credits around?

The translation seems great, but the credits for the translation seem a bit overkill compared to what I'm used to in megadrive translations and the like.

I think that's the only option. romhacking.net lists several translations, of which 2 are marked finished. one of them is too big to put on a real cart, and i think the last patch produces the rom you listed. I didn't verify all of that but its an educated guess.

I have the unaltered hex edited version, however I do not put it on carts.

Thanks

Hey I have a question for you guys my local radioshack did not have these parts
1) 10 ohm Resistor
(1) 2.2uF 16v Capacitor
can any other kinds be used in their place for instance a capacitor with a different voltage

You actually have a lot of options as far as that goes. For the resistor, you can put 2 5ohm resistors in series, or two 20ohm resistors in parallel. For the capacitor, it's the opposite. Put two 4.4uF caps in series, or two 1.1uF caps in parallel.

Alright so I found 10 ohm resistors, they are 1/4 watt. The tutorial did not specify so does that matter? The capacitor I found is 2.2 uF and says 50 volts maximum so will that work?

those will work you can use any power handling rating just make sure the capacitance (uF) and resistance (ohm) match

and don't use resistors in parallel, one component will always be slightly stronger and you'll end up bypassing one component. this is one of those things that in theory work but in practice are dubious. in series they do work that way though.

Will someone please post a picture of the final project? I'm getting confused on some parts and it would be easier for me to see. Thanks.

Here's a probably dumb question, but this is the only really complex (to me) NES repro I've attempted: Let's say I used a CHR RAM chip not listed in this thread and tried to test the game without adding the battery, should I expect any result other than the opening music with either a blue screen w/ garbled characters or a load screen that freezes after a second?

Great thread by the way. I'll be moving onto one of the suggested RAM chips just as soon as I can get to the flea market tomorrow.

the battery circuit doesn't have any affect on the game running or not. my results from testing were:

prg only: program runs, music plays, graphics are garbled. you can see the "text" being written out to the opening screen but it's not readable

incompatible ram: solid blue screen, no music

good ram: everything as expected, music, graphics are right, etc

here's my first finished example. I studied the instructions here and rerouted some wires so everything  is equivalent but different. I pulled the resistor, diodes, and capacitor from an al unser cart. oh and fyi, that nec 64s20 used as wram on the smb2 cart also works for chr-ram here, in case you need to swap with an incompatible chip.

Thanks. Sounds like it's time to track down some a proper CHR.

Weird. I threw in the RAM chip from Al Unser Jr. and now I'm getting a black screen. Were there any traces cut in those last two pics?

Okay, what MMC3 revisions will work with what? I choose to use TKROM and wire in a pin vs cutting up a mario 2 and have some problems with certain boards. I can get FF3 to boot and give a blue screen and music but no text or game, but had a similar issue with DOAE2 and I'm guessing it's something to do with the MMC3. Any help would be appreciated.

Just FYI

1) if you want to keep saves with battery backup SRAM chip MUST be "low power" ie contain L in part number
2) i would not recommend to use chips made by Sony with date code mid 86'
3) capacitor can be any from 2.2uF to 22uF - most official carts has 10uF capacitor. Voltage minimum 6.3V.
4) resistor in official carts with battery backup is 1kOhm

For those who have thanked me, I appreciate the information. Everything is done the same like you would with any other cart, except what I mentioned.

If you want to avoid any issues, if you don't understand how chips, etc. work, I would stick to strictly following what chips and wiring I'm using. That why you aren't wasting your money or ruining any more games.

Again Good Luck.

I think so, for the two pins that are wired completely on the back of the cart. for pins that needed rewiring I followed the traces to see if i could isolate the hole and leave a remote point. if so i cut the trace and left the pin on the eprom down
