The bosses are a nice twist in the game.
The cut scenes are amazing for nes standards.
Btw good luck with the 4 boss

Does Boss 4 add to the score?  I mean, I'd like to beat the game, just because I've never played it before this week.

But if he isn't worth any points, I guess it doesn't really matter how hard he is! (since the bonus levels aren't part of the contest)

ok

I played through a lot of the game prior to this score, just to know what the levels/puzzles were. That was great advice given earlier in this thread

this is my first death (i did end up with extra guys, but here is the first death)

3,535,900

I KNOW i can do better (and i will )

level 3-3 the first time i played it really crippled me. those Dark Nut like soldiers were a bitch
I am sad i died here, bc when i playing through before, I found this level extremely easy (and it is)

Play level 4 in advance, there are a lot of cheap deaths there and hard puzzles .
A lot of people also have problems with multi moving enemies . The raccoon and the canon are great exsamples.

You don't want to be in a situation where you have to solve a puzzle AND have moving enemies on screen .
Especially in a 1 life contest.

Aside from the extra enemies, Level 4 is actually the only stretch of the game with "real puzzles", IMO, so it ramps up difficulty pretty considerably on multiple fronts.

At least the screen doesn't black-out when you pause to get your bearings...

I'm not sure.
I always play with the bonus levels.
Just take your picture on the last level. (just in case)

Because we only play till world 4 speed will be a factor also. ( for the highest score )

Given some of the trial-and-error on Level 4, I won't be surprised if completion percentage is going to be the driving score differentiator, except for maybe the top 2 or 3 slots.

I mean, I thought this was a ridiculously easy game until I got to Level 4, now I am having to work for it.

If you think level 4 ramps up the difficulty you should really play the special rounds !     just for fun
And without youtube help. Because that is how i did it as a kid.

Didn't even occur to me to use Youtube.

I will definitely play through the special levels later.  This feels like a game I will want to replay in the future.

But in all seriousness, with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 puzzles throughout Levels 1-3, they are all just a fairly straightforward matter of not getting hit and collecting the bags.

Level 4, there are some genuine (and quite time sensitive) puzzles, that really change the character of the game and make it feel more like a puzzle game.

I have beaten this game many times before so i really haven't thought of that.
But because this takes about an hour and is a 1 life contest you could be right.

Just checked, final boss does not give any points.

I agree that worlds 1-3 are pretty straightforward for the most part then world 4 ups the ante. It will be the deciding factor for good runs and great ones.

17 stages per world.  That is 68 total scoring stages, since the bosses are worthless.

94,338 / stage is a really strong average, in my opinion.
(world 1, you can average a little over 100k/stage due to the abundant popscicles, but it planes off pretty hard in world 2... and the levels only get more time consuming from there)

That is totally believable as a world record if it doesn't include the bonus stages.

I know my word isn't official but if it helps end any confusion until he logs in later, bimmy is not allowing the special rounds. I asked him, btw, I didn't assume
No special rounds! Why you're avatar have some clown make up for then?

My vote would be if more than one person actually manages to finish the game without dying that the bonus rounds should be allowed (they seem to just be a 5th set of levels, with a big difficulty increase -- so not sure why they wouldn't be part of the contest)

Given the plethora of opportunity for stupid deaths, though, I'm having a hard time seeing it being an issue, though, since it is a 1-life contest.

I'm going to be impressed as hell if somebody shows up with a 1-life beat on this one.

How far have you gone in 1-life?

I am pretty sure I can overcome the stupid deaths in World 3, but World 4... I can see how the game is beatable without continues, but zero room for careless errors is a tough one on this game.

The fact that it is quite long to actually get where the game gets challenging can be a turn down. Losing your life far in world 3 or early in world 4, it is hard mentally to keep the controller in your hands and gave it another try instantly.

That, too.

Personally, I've just been playing through the entire game at least once per day, and on Saturday or Sunday, I will sit down and just give one or two attempts to see how far I can get in one life.

Old score: 3,386,400

Old Comment:  First time I was able to clear the first two worlds without dying and then I lose by being careless on the first level of World 3.  I'm really disappointed in this actually, haha.  Time is at a premium for the rest of the week but I really want to get more attempts in.

^^^ That would be a pretty wretched-feeling level to die on, too...

EDIT to add: in terms of pace, that seems like a really good run, by the way.  I thought I had a pretty fast (and thorough) run going but I'm 70,000 points behind by that stage... I guess in my "real run" I won't waste any time at all with 1-ups, but in my practice I'd like to beat the game without continues.

There are definitely a couple of levels where if I'm not on top of things I'll just stand there like a dumbass and get bowled over by an ice block or hammer...

Actually the worst are when you press the direction key just a little too long and  instead of turning in place you step right into a Noggle and die...

For how much I played the hell out of Lolo as a kid (though I only had the first one), I think this would have been near the top of my list, if I had owned it.

Your first sentence describes me exactly!

I played through the main game twice on Tuesday just to get a feel for the puzzles (and bosses) all over again.  I have all these levels figured out already so I know I can beat this on one life if I get lucky enough but with the small margin for error it's doubtful.

I love Lolo as well and this game is just as good in it's own way.  I've had this one in the collection since childhood and I remember sitting down one night vowing to plow through the Special Game, and I did it.  I have no idea how I was able to pull it off and I've only done it once.  I recommend giving it a try outside of the contest ... it can be brutal but I think it's where the game really shines.
