yeah, I don't think I'll beat it, but since most of my deaths are stupid platform-falls, and I've reached Medusa, I'm pretty sure I can get to Level 5 or farther.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Well, looks like it's emulator time
It was going to be emulator time for me, anyway, since I typically use a PowerPak...

Is there anyway to get it to work on the Powerpak that you know of?

I don't think the MMC5 is supported on the PowerPak. This means that this game, Kirby's Adventure, Laser Invasion and some Koei games won't work. Those games don't even use the MMC5 at its full capabilities (except maybe Kirby). The more impressive MMC5 games are Japanese games such as Just Breed.

Kirby and Laser Invasion work but I haven't tried any Koei games yet. On a side note, I was playing Beat'em on my powerpak last night... Nice job with that one Vex... my high score was over a 150 loads!

if someone actually beats this I would be more than a little impressed! I only played through this once and I can even tell you how many days and continues it took. The last few levels are brutal.

I got to the Level 4 boss where it is the twin-mummies so I beat them... then promptly got my ass kicked by Cyclops #2

Didn't realize that was coming.  Had a ton of extra lives and then pissed them all away before I could even get to the boss again.

I think someone will beat the game this week.

Here's a little tip I picked up! On the Cyclops boss at the end of Stage 3, there's meat hidden in one of the blocks on the left. Don't get it! I got the meat because I needed some health for the fight but that block I crushed was my foothold for dodging the boss on that side and I ended up dying. I probably would have won had I left the block alone. Irony! =P

Nah, get the meat to refill your health and switch to Grant to jump onto the platform.

Then jump over the cyclop's head, and get to the lower platform, and switch back to Trevor.

With the upgraded whip, just keep whipping from a squatting position and you'll kill the boss with at least 1/3 to 1/2 of your life in tact.

Until I reached the final boss of Level 4 (the twin mummies followed by cyclops #2), I had the impression that the bosses in this game are stupidly easy, since as long as you have an upgraded whip and 75% or more of your health you WILL win a war of raw attrition, since your hits do more damage and strike more frequently than those of your opponent.

The level 4 boss changed my mind about how the rest of the game is probably going to look.  HUGE shift in terms of what the bosses will take, at that point.

Man I really don't think this game is beatable without continuing in such a short period unless you are a pro and have previously done this(but I would love to see it)!. Draculas level alone will destroy that I think, you die twice on his level and have to start the whole game over? if I remember there are like 12 levels also its a pretty long game

What?  So his level has a different death/restart mechanic than the rest of the game?

LOL!  no i just mean per the contest you cant play on life 0 so just saying per the contest i find it almost impossible someone could beat this game without using a continue.  Basically if you get as far as dracula with 2 lives and die twice you have to start all over if you are going to beat per the rules

There are numerous 1-ups in the game and you get a 1-up at 20k pts and 50k pts (and every 50k pts from then on).

If you can avoid dying before you getting to his stage, you will definitely have more than 2 lives in reserve.
(my best run I had around 5 lives in reserve by the time I reached the Level 4 boss, for instance)

yeah totally agree but I am just thinking for the sake of this game having a big reserve of lives by the time you reach the last stage would either take a pro at this game already or a crap ton of game play. im probably going to be totally wrong on this by the way im sure a couple guys will crush it.

I am just trying to think back when I beat it a couple years ago, I want to say I logged about 10 hours of gameplay just to beat it using continues.

You should probably ban the other 3 special names, as well, since having the alternate characters early can open up at least one extra 1-up.

Thanks for pointing this out, arch.  I forgot about those other passwords and will add a rule right away.

I dont' think I'm likely to pull it off, but I was just pointing out that IF somebody  can make it to the final level without continues, they can probably do it with lives to spare.

The object of this contest is to get as far in the game as possible with lower scores taking precedence when two or more people end their attempts in the same spot. If you want to rack up your score to get extra lives to be able to have plenty in reserve to fight Dracula, that's perfectly fine. My recommendation would be to first attempt to beat the game and then find spots where you can diminish your points to lower your scores.

This is the best advice.  It seems like this always needs to be repeated whenever there's a best progression / low score contest.  =)

Haha, yeah you are exactly right.  I always forget about using Grant!

I think for me it is easier just to leave that block there because with my strategy I can beat the boss without taking a hit.  When I played last night I didn't know what boss it was because I got the meat before the fight even started.

Also, the attrition strategy falls apart as soon as you get to a boss that is primarily in the air.

wow I just looked up how many levels, I guess there are only 9. I think I just need to face the facts I am a medicore gamer haha. Either that or I am having memory loss I just remember this game being fairly tough and the thought of beating without continuing seems like a mountain of a task

Good Luck guys!

You are much better than a "mediocre gamer."

I forget where but this game does have some difficulty spike about 1/2 - 2/3 the way through.

I would say I'm a pretty good gamer but I've only beat this game once or twice, and that's with continues.  But I think I get to a point and just get bored with the game.  Blasphemy, I know!

I feel like once you get the hang of the clock tower, the difficulty spike is that first room of 4-0E with the crows and pits, and no worthwhile upgrades (or health) prior to the Level 4 boss (which is also a double boss-fight).

This is definitely where my attrition-tactic against the bosses fails utterly.

lol yeah this game if I am remembering right the last level scrolls downward? I think? and it is a pretty big pain in the arse just to get to drac with some decent life to smoke him that is if you don't die on the way down.

Really fun game though just good ol classic controller throwing nes parts. ALso some pretty solid tunes on this game if I may add

oh yeah and again just going by my bad memory here but I don't think you get to start at Dracula again and again once you die (unlike the original castlevania ). I think you have to do the who stage section with the downward scroll everytime grrrrrr
