Yeah it's pretty awesome. What I love about the fan made kits is how much detail is put into them, most sets for kids now a car is like 4 big pieces instead of a few hundred little ones.

A tree I made the other day.  I need a few more of these leaf pieces to fill out the top and then it will be totally done.  Sorry for the green background.  The window sill was the best place at the moment for me to put the tree for the picture.

This thread is so awesome.

As a child, when I wasn't gaming, I was building things with legos.

I loved to make two massive ships of some sort then have them destroy each other so I could build new different monstrosities.

I've tried buying some since all of mine were gifted away long ago but sadly legos appear appreciate. A medium sized flat rate box full of legos sells for $100 where I live and anything as big as one of those plastic tubs will cost $500+. Ebay isn't any cheaper. I don't even want one of the box sets. I prefer to make my own creations.

Hopefully the Death Star set is still available by the time I get around to buying one. It took me in the 6 hour range to build the Millenium Falcon, the Death Star is a day project for sure.

I'm big into castle/knight theme Lego, or I was. I had to dismantle it all to make room on my shelf for games/comics. I want to rebuild but damn, it will take a long time and I currently have no room. I want to get the LOTR/Hobbit Lego as that was always what I had in my mind when I used to build. Anyone use the site http://www.bricklink.com/... , it's a pretty sweet site if your looking for a few pieces or entire sets.

I'm currently in a situation like that where I'm reassembling a bunch of space and castle sets from my childhood (to keep) and to sort out the other sets which will be okay to sell. It's a lot of work for sure, but it's great to think that maybe one day I'll have everything I could use for some larger project.

I've used bricklink several times to get some pieces for a Medieval theme I'm working on and that site is great.  I'm working on a guard tower right now, but need to order a few more pieces to continue the build.  I'll try to get some pics posted this weekend of what I've built so far.  In the meantime, I've temporarily stopped building it to work on another even bigger Lego project, which I will also post some picctures of (HINT: dra600n mentioned it above )

Construction of the Lego Death Star has commenced!  I got this for my birthday over a month and a half ago from my girlfriend and I've fianlly gotten the time and space to start working on it.  I started working on this a couple nights ago and have been chipping away at it ever since.  The set is 3803 pieces and in nearly 50 bags, so it's gonna take a while to build.  I took some pictures at different stages of the building process for you guys to drool over who are interested.  I will post more as I work on it.

These are all the minifigures in the set, a whopping 22!  2 Emperor Royal Guards, 2 Death Star Troopers, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Grand Moff Tarkin, an Imperial Droid, Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise with hair and a helmet, 2 Stormtroopers, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper disguise with hair and a helmet, R2-D2, an Imperial Astromech Droid, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker from Return of the Jedi, The Emperor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and an Assassin Droid.  You also construct a Mouse Droid, the Interrogation Droid, the Dianoga (Trash Monster), and a diagnostics cart.

This is the manual for this bad boy.  Biggest Lego instruction book I've ever seen and it's spiral-bound too.

Construction of the bottom level, which doesn't have much of anything special.  The section with the black railing is going to end up being the pit that Luke and Leia swing over to escape the Stormtroopers.

Another shot of the bottom level.  There will eventually be an elevator in the very middle that will reach every floor.

Construction of the first floor.  There will be various things on this level, including the garbage, a maintenance bay, a laser cannon, the pit for Luke and Leia to swing over, and the tractor beam for Obi-Wan to deactivate.

Another shot just to show how high the first floor is above the bottom level.  Also included is some cinnamon whiskey

Night Two of Death Star construction:

The first night of building the Death Star consisted of constructing the pieces in bags "1."  Lego has been packaging sets in numbered bags for several years now and this is how it works if you're not familiar with it.  When you build a set, the instructions have you build it in sections and each numbered bag corresponds to a section of the set.  So, the first section of a set is in bag 1 (or there may be more than bag 1), the second section in bag 2, and so on.  This is done to cut down on the sorting of pieces and really helps out on big sets.  Many years ago, all the pieces were just put into bags and you had to open them all when building a set.  Now, you can build them one section at a time   Last night consisted of constructing all the pieces in bags "2" and I did a little bit of bags "3."

This is still the first floor prior to putting on the walls to the garbage.  The walls were built up a little higher and a few minor details added to the rest of the set.

Here are the walls for the garbage.  In this picture, it's not complete, but there is an assembly you construct which will make the walls close in.

A laser cannon will go here eventually and it will actually be the next thing I build in the manual.

A maintenance bay which will have a crane eventually.  The string is for a platformer that will raise minifigures up to a vehicle bay which will be built in another section.  Part of the elevator was constructed and also a couple ladders that lead on to the next section.

The pit which Luke and Leia swing over.  My cinnamon whiskey makes another appearance

The tractor beam core/reactor/whatever you want to call it that Obi-Wan deactivates in the movie so everyone can escape the Death Star.  It doesn't look that big, but it's probably the size of two minifigures standing on top of each other.  You build it separate and then attach it to the Death Star.

The tractor beam reactor/core in place and the "trash" added to the garbage.  You can also see the assembly which makes the walls close in.  Just push the bar with the red piece on the end forward and the walls close   That's all for now.  If I build any of it tonight, it will be very minor.

I have the original pirate ship set from back in 1989 here, the Black Seas Barracuda.
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogI...

I know annoyingly I'm missing a few non-vital parts, it can be rebuilt. It had been in a box for over a decade in moderate sized chunks and caked in a layer of dust so I had to part it all out piece by piece, then by general colors and gave them a dawn/water soak for a week (not the sails, still haven't cleaned them up yet.) If I could just get motivated I'd put the thing back together as it was awesome.

That fireball stuff is dangerous. Liquid candy.

Providence?!

Sorry the picture is so bad but its basically a large bin full of legos.

I decided to start simple and make the large ship in this picture. How hard could it be?

Yeah... After some failure I decided to go for something a little smaller. Here's where I am now:

Anyone able to recognize it? I'm missing a lot of necessary parts to really make it but I thought it was worth a shot.

The chair part even dops out the bottom which is an even bigger hint at what this is.

I've learned a lot about legos and myself as I've run into complications. The first is the knowledge of how to transfer an image in the mind into legos. Its definitely a skill! It occurs to me when I built things decades ago I never tried to make something specific out of legos. If I wanted an airship/sub combo I would play with the legos for hours until I got something I liked, then blow it up and start anew.

I'm also realizing that despite having more legos than ever I don't know them very well. I recall as a child being able to have a general idea of everything I had. Without that knowledge building has been slow.

Does everyone else store legos in a giant tub/box and just dump them out when you want to build something? I've been kinda sorting some into colors, some strange blocks together, wings, joints, dudes, and so on. Not sure its actually helping yet though. Curious if anyone else does that.

What really gets me is this though: I have a large tub (about 20 x 14 x 12) that is three quarters full and I don't have any blocks like the ones eCockpit used to make his Koopa Troopa. THAT I am definitely not used to. Looks like I have parts from the newer lousy Star Wars movies, Transformers, lego city, maybe a few air things, and a train that when I bought them the lady said they forgot (so I have some parts of it).

I had also forgotten that legos are a magnet for filth. The day I got them I had the rest of the day free so I spent it watching movies while I tried to separate the legos from hair, fur, carpet, and other mysterious objects. In total I watched an hour long stand up comedian, Hunt for Red October, A Cat in Paris, Attack of the Giant Crab (I think thats the name), Barbarella, an episode of Top Gear, and an episode of Dilbert. The mass of crap filled an entire vacuum. I still want to soak everthing in some bleach or something but I'm not sure how to go about that and I don't want to ruin the stickers.

I love LEGO and have recently been buying some of the sets I wanted as a kid but never got. My favorites were the Islanders and Pirates. I was obsessed with them and always asked for them at Christmas. Yet my mum bought the biggest Islanders set for my little brother and I got Mario Paint. Oh well, thanks mum :\ Dragon Masters, Forestmen, and Black Knights where some of my other favorites but who again got these? My brother. I always got gifts like Math Blaster and science books and my brother got LEGO and Wolfenstein. Oh well, enough with my future therapy sessions.

I've been buying some of the small sets and cleaning them because it seems no matter who I buy from, they are insanely dusty. Then if they fit I put them in these:

That's the Dragon Wagon from Dragon Masters on the left and Crocodile Cage w/ Island Catamaran on the right. Forbidden Island from the 1989 Pirate releases is on top. I really need to disassemble that and put it away until I can find a display case. My house gets hella dusty.

Then earlier this year I was able to buy the most sought after LEGO set of my youth. The one ship I pined for, more than any video game or toy, and left a hole inside my childhood self for never being able to see it with my own eyes. The Skull's Eye Schooner:

This was a progression pic. Yes I'm a big enough nerd that I documented the entire process with photos . I found one that had absolutely Mint sails and string, but when I got this far I realized I had no way of preserving it in a finished state. I didn't want to put one inch of mileage on those sails. When I put them on, it will be permanent. The sails are incredibly expensive because most of them were made for just this ship. Replacing any of them, including the small triangular sails, is absurdly expensive. I already bought a couple extra ones that I found Mint (for reasons explained below).

If anyone has a clue where I can find a display case that can fit this puppy, that won't cost me over a hundred bucks, please send me a PM. This is what the ship looks like with Mint sails:

Yes I'm aware this picture is a customized version with more cannons and an extra couple sails, which I'm totally going to attempt when the ship is rebuilt. I have all the extra cannons, green flaps, sails, and masts that are needed and think I understand how to make this work. My initial construction was based solely off the manual, which looks cool enough already but this picture I found is GODLY.

For those of you who like Firefly and Serenity, you will love these pictures. My brother sent me this link yesterday and I've never seen the show, but this is really impressive. Even if you don't watch or like the show or movie, still check these out. Very awesome work!
