I just had the most storied round of Golf
Birdied the first three holes, which is not uncommon, since they seem to be the easiest of the course. Double bogey'd something in the first ten, which isn't great, but is also pretty common. Pretty good round at that point as I was just really trying to have a shot at beating my +2.
Then I got a
hole-in-one on Hole 11. It was a thing of beauty. I want to say the wind was blowing pretty heavily to the west or southwest (West being to the left in my mind). So I set up a risky high slice shot and let loose on a prayer. The ball dropped in on a rope. I was in disbelief.
So now I'm on hole 12, at -6, and starting to realize this could be the round that takes first place. Its never good when I think that; especially with lots of game left to play. I have a history of botching rounds like that because the nerves gradually get to me, BAD. It happened in Battletoads and Ghost n Goblins. It was really, really bad in Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon. And I knew it was probable for golf. Hell I usually meltdown on the last 5 holes even when there aren't any nerves.
But I did fine. Think I double bogey'd one and birdied two others Missed another birdy by a sprite at most. Everything was coming up Brock.
Then I arrived at the dreaded hole 18. I don't know what it is about that hole, but +5s and +6s are the norm. OoB shots with regularity. I considered pulling out one of the irons and just baby'ing my way down the course. I could live with shooting a 6.
But I'm a go-big-or-go-home sort of guy, so of course I went with a full power 1W. My ruler and the wind said I could land between the trees and the pit with just the right amount of hook, so I went for it. And it was perfect.
It's the next shot that will kill you though. You've got a small green surrounded by OoB, with a large trap in front, and the water everywhere to the right. So I had two options; sail it towards the water and give it massive spin and hope that and the wind are just enough to land it fair, or sail it over the trees and hope you can thread the needle between the OoB and the pit. I went with option 2; the sand pit was perfectly acceptable at this point considering the alternatives.
So I let fly and what do you know, it landed just south of the green, and just outside of the trap.
Or was it? One super frustrating thing about this game are the traps, and how they don't seem to be accurately confined within the yellow (teknoskan touched upon this). I appeared to be on the fairway, but I'd waste a shot if I tried to use the PW and I was actually in sand.
I decided to hedge my bets and use the SW. I'd give it a medium power shot, ensure I clear the trap (if I was in one) and hopefully make it to the green. So I let fly and.... sailed it over the green into the OoB
Okay, not great. But I must not be in the trap at least. So let's try again with the PW. Give it medium-low power and... sailed it over the green into the OoB again.
Now the panic is at running at full pitch. I don't have the heart to look at my strokes and see how badly I just screwed the pooch, but I know that desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm going to have to putt this thing across the fairway and up onto the green. I've done that before when I'm a few feet off into the fringe, but nothing like this. I had to be at least 10 yards from the green's edge. So I say prayer and lay into it, and thank god it rolls in the vicinity of the hole. Nice save
Of course I then missed
that putt because I was still in shock and didn't properly take my time
Score on 18 = quadruple bogey
Final score = -2
You should totes write a book. That was an amazing story, and now you're hanging out with the cool kids. Good job Brock!
