I was thinking about firing up a RPG for the NES.  My definition of a RPG here is a game with a battery and not a sports game.

Which one should I fire up?  I have played the following so anything besides these I would consider.

Zelda games
Dragon Warrior 1
Ultima Avitar
Maniac Mansion
Destiny of an Emperor
Crystalis

Any help would be appreciated

I'm a pretty big fan of Uncharted Waters -- sail to ports around the world; trading goods, fighting pirates, and doing missions for the king. Final Fantasy and the rest of the Dragon Warrior series are very good as well.

This sounds pretty good...does it have a lot of the rpg aspects of levelling up, getting more powerful weapons over time etc?

Yes, your fame goes up as you complete certain tasks. Finding new ports, acquiring certain goods for merchants at ports, gaining allies for Portugal (your home country in the game), defeating pirates, etc. Once your fame hits certain numbers, the king asks your to complete tasks to gain new titles. You can also build up your fleet of ships (from the small trade ships all the way to huge galleons with lots of gun placements).

The graphics are nothing great, but i really enjoy the RPG aspects of it.

I forgot about Faxanadu, that is good as well.

Darn, I don't have this Uncharted Waters game. Will definitely try it one day.

Hm...can't rightly say I agree with you there, Duder...

Dragon Warrior IV, if you don't have it already...get it, set aside a good 80-150 hours and play it through.  You will be presented with the finest 80-150 hours of gameplay available on the NES, with a deep and engrossing storyline, a decently high fun factor (casinos! ), as well as a most pleasing visual and audio experience.  And if you're looking for a showcase of what kind of horsepower the NES has, and don't feel like importing Final Fantasy III from Japan or an AV Famicom and Akumajo Dracula III, look no further...at times (not as often as FF III, but still semi-often), you might think you were playing a SNES game.

Buy it here .

I always wondered but forget to ask, do you need to play DW 1 to get into DW 2 or 3 or 4? Or are they like Zelda where it doesnt really matter what happened with the last game? I have DW 1 and 2, but still need to get 3 and 4. I havent played very far into either of them though. Ive tried to play DW1 a few times but I just wasnt into it for some reason.

They're a lot like Zelda for the most part, though the storylines for DW I through III do have some connection, albeit minor (I through III are part of the Erdrick saga, and IV through VI are part of the Zenithia saga). As for DW I, well...it poses a bit of challenge, to say the least, and not quite as much in the fun direction. DW II is where you start to see how great the series in general really is. A lot of people consider DW III a classic (oddly, I myself couldn't really get into it...maybe because I never really sat down to play it), and a lot of other people consider DW IV a classic (myself very much included).

I'd have to say final fantasy or dragon warrior. Zelda and Faxanadu etc are more action/adventure games than rpgs.

Is Uncharted Waters similar to Pirates?  Sounds like a pretty good game.

Faria should also be pretty good...I've never beaten it, but from what I recall it had some pretty decent gameplay.

I really enjoyed Magic of Scheherezade when I was a kid.  I haven't played through it recently though.  Lots of other good suggestions already too.

I think I'm the only person on the planet that likes Ultima: Exodus. You could check that out, but I will admit, it's kind of dated. Very challenging though, as you pretty much have to go and level up like mad and get gold to be able to advance more easily.

Yes Willow is fun. Faria is a cool RPG that a lot of people have never played.

I just played through Shadowgate -- I thought it was a fun little game.  Kind of a cross between a King's Quest game and Maniac Mansion.

Heck yes to Willow! It's a little lengthy and the only trouble with Willow is that you can't save, you have to enter a password. A long and confusing password.

Lots of love for Faxanadu, and I agree that its a great game. The only problem is it has a glaring flaw; possibly the worst password system for the NES. I have started that game countless times just to receive a password after a few hours of game play that flat out won't work. A battery saved Faxanadu would have been a great title without a doubt. If you're talking about platform/action RPGs, I'd have:

Faxanadu
Crystalis
Battle of Olympus
Willow

For turn based RPGs, I'd agree with basically everything that has been said already.
