Central-America, so they wouldn't be alligators.
They would be crocodiles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More...

I hate to have to correct your correction... but alligators are only native to North America and parts of China. (though they are different species in each)

Crocodiles are definitely native to the parts of Central America inhabited by the Mayans.

(and would definitely be worth including as an enemy type)

Though per the original question about enemy types, when I think of Mayan ruins, I think of Indiana Jones-style traps more than I think about living foes.

Yeah, things are taking shape. I have a much better way of handling sprite animations than before. The main setback now is deciding if we want to do 8x8 tiles or 16x16. The 16x16 collision is simple. 8x8 is doable, but more tricky. I was charting possible ideas for doing it, but I am concerned how much more code is needed to convert to that style. Once it's settled, I can do more stuff. Ladders will be something new for me to try as well. Apparently, we'll be doing platforms one can jump up through like Contra.

So many new elements.

Good Stuff Sivak! You already have my money.

Side note: playing Battlekid at the moment. I want to break my controller and I am only past the first boss. What a challenging fun game!

Haha I feel the same about battle kid.... brings back that try try again frustration from being a kid instead of breezing through some of the newer games out there, but when you do succeed it's such an achievement!

Good to see you making progress on your new game

For enemies. There needs to be Tiki Looking guys. That's a classic!

Some kind of alien looking guy would always be cool.

Also a stone made Mayan Contraption that comes after you. Basically something that looks way to advanced for them but is made out of stone.

I love that idea. Immediately thought of 'Ancient Aliens'.

What's new: The general engine is getting there.
-All general collision detection seems OK
-Jumping and falling work. We need to decide on how much he can jump is all. This is nothing more than simple number changes
-Ladders work (little tricky with the tops of ladders)
-Screen transitions are fine
-I made my level editor in C++ and it's way better than that old BK2 one.

Next up probably will be getting enemies/objects to actually do things other than play an animation. I'm also hoping to start the main area theme. It just uses BK2 music for the time being.

Progression indeed.

Just thought I'd share 2 screenshots of the game.

I got the most important thing to work in the game today:  Preliminary death (and respawning)

Most basic elements are all done.  The next phase is enemies and items I suppose.

PolarBear's suggestions of very specific species instead of generic snake/monkey/bee/etc. has greatly boosted my interest in this game. I'm a complete sucker for anything that's thoroughly researched and historically or geographically accurately.

Also, game's looking boss so far.
