There is nothing else with "city" in it that would work for this

How interesting, also odd how they mix a single NES game in with a much of movies. And then that NES Simcity, wonder what the purpose was putting these in there.

Very nice catch. I really don't think that says Sim City though. It looks like a one word title of a VHS that just happens to end in city.

Thats actually really cool. Never even thought to look for NES games there!

I think that is a Sim City SNES box.

It's pretty crazy that this particular episode came out in 1998, and he STILL had NES boxes on his shelf.

Wow... jury's still out for me on that alleged Sim City box, but it is definitely cool that you've spotted something the rest of us nes-heads could not... I have seen every episode probably 10+ times dating back to the original air dates from season 2 onward, and I have NEVER noticed this. Talk about your eagle eye...

My mantra, as worded by SamSpade on 06/12/12:
I don't resell to fund my collection, I don't treat this hobby like a second job, I don't care if my collection is worth ten bucks or ten thousand because I never plan on selling it. Seriously, what does the value have to do with anything if you never plan on selling? Speculation doesn't mean jack shit to me at this point, I just want to play my nes games...

Im gettin all "nancy drew" on this haha.
Few thoughts;
The nintendo logo isnt consistent on the "sim" box. It appears slightly smaller, and much further down. I was checking my boxes and not all have the logo in the same spot obviously, but ones from around the same time period do seem to. That of course may only be relevant to games nintendo actually published.

Looking at the snes box, I dont see a publisher on it so perhaps nintendo did publish it? In any case you can see the snes box does infact have the same type of logo on the spine, and it does appear much further down on the box, at the bottom, unlike the nes.

Im pretty sure we are just looking at the box from a weird angle so it seems only as thick as an nes box when in actuality it is thicker.

Aside from the fact of the angle, certain types of lenses can make things they film seem weird like that. Wide angle lenses, I believe, compress everything behind the main focus of attention because they have such a large field of depth they can capture.

Summation: I think Its an SNES box thats either been crushed, or filmed from a weird angle.

Some closing thoughts haha

Perhaps the show asked nintendo for some empty boxes to use in some episodes. Companies would comply with things like this, if you help them out in return. Thus, sure we'll give you boxes, but you better be able to see the company logos on them. Nes product placement =)

Ok, I don't think it's a SNES box, mainly due to it's size. I took the SNES box from the previous page, rearranged the image so the spine was approximately the same width as the NES boxes on the shelf, and you can clearly see the height just isn't anywhere near right. Sure SNES boxes should be fatter which would make it a bit taller, but I'm just going by what I can see in this photo.

LOL, I dont think your pic would hold up as evidence in court there. The snes pic was at an angel too for one, the scale is definitely whacked out.  Anyhow  snes boxes and nes boxes are the same height, and snes boxes are only like 1/4" thicker. Im pissed i dont have any snes boxes w/ nintendo logos at the bottom or Id try to recreate the shot. I do have tetris and superspike lol. Putting those games side to side they are just as tall, and the logos would be in their corresponding areas. Your eyes are just playing tricks on you haha

Perhaps the game next to sim city is also an snes / nes game?? It seems the same size as well, I cant quite read it, but to anyone with tons of snes boxes, does that box look familiar?
Gonna sleuth around the net some more.

WOW kudos to the Jone Boner for his hawk-like eyes.

My thoughts are that this is the SNES box turned on its side. NES and SNES games are the same in height and width when turned on their sides, though they are a little deeper. I think we just can't notice a distinguishable difference because of the pictures. Does anybody agree with me?

Pretty sure its an snes box too. Also the box to the right of it looks like another snes box. all the nintendo boxes are the same height.. shorter then the VHS tapes, next to the box, to the right of sim city.

I think your thinking too much into it.  The set designers go out and buy this stuff on their own.  If this was 1998, they probably went to a flea market or second hand store with some cashh to buy set decorations.  They probablly just stumbled across some VHS and Nintendo games for cheap.

I think it is a SNES box as well. It would make zero since to for them to have a unreleased NES box, I mean why would they?

Definitely I agree. The SNES and NES are the same in height and with, and I think that it will just be impossible to tell the difference between the two. Also, it would seem more appropriate at that time for them to be SNES, since NES was out awhile ago.

Hmm, I really am skeptical about it being an SNES box, although all logical reason would point to that solution. However,

1) I think the fonts are clearly different, someone with photoshop skills could surely sharpen the image (it DEFINITELY says SimCity though, no arguing that)

2) It looks exactly the same as the NES boxes, a 1/4" difference would still be visible to the naked eye at the last picture.

As for the other comment about the "game" to the right, I'm 99% sure that isn't a game. It's a VHS or something.

I'm not going to go through all the other episodes of Seinfeld to get another screenshot, but I can almost GUARANTEE you'd get a closer image in 1 of the other 75-100 episodes. If anyone is watching a DVD of Seinfeld, make sure you pause it around the bookcase and see if you can get a good screenshot to shed more light on this issue...

I was able to sharpen the lines on your television easily enough. There was very little effect on the text on the Sim City box, however.

I can't decide wheter it looks as wide compared to the tetris lookin' box right beside it as one would expect from an SNES game. It's really hard to tell given the weird perspective and warping. I mean, just look at the tops compared to the bottoms.

If it's pushed in farther or pulled out more, that changes the perspective compared to the stuff around it as well.

(it's also quite possible those are rental clamshells or cut up by the prop guys to look more vhs-ey or something)

Also, the red strip is not visible.

I was trying to think it could be something like SunCity or something. To me there's some fishyness by the I if its Sim. seems like there's more there than just an I.

Old VHS crap movie i'm going with. But I really want to see the actual product. whatever it is.

Okay, in 1998 "Dark City" came out and in 1996 Robert Altmans "Kansas City" came out, both titles were in a red font, but I can't find VHS box pictures.
Also, looking at the picture the box looks to be open at the top, kinda like a VHS box so that the movie just slides out.
