There's a lot to learn for somebody who's never played a Punch-Out game before. I've been playing this for years, and probably so has quest4nes.

As for Chan, you probably already know the basics of how to beat him, but just in case... Dodge his karate chops and then punch him. If your KO meter is full then quickly throw a KO punch after you've stunned him with a regular punch. When he does his flying kick of doom, duck a little early (like right after he leaps to the other corner). Don't duck too late.

Keep dodging to the opposite side when he starts throwing his series of kicks in a row. Sometimes you have to dodge left and sometimes you have to dodge right depending on which side he's kicking.

He usually tries to heal himself after he's knocked down. Punch him out of it.

You should have no trouble once you know how to react to his small handful of tricks. He's super easy compared to what comes after him. The big boss of that circuit Mr. Sandman wiill really give you fits.

I'm not gonna prohibit studying longplays, or using save states to practice, or do anything else to prevent people from studying exact strategies and replicating them for near perfect time. People who have played the game a million times are probably already at this level anyways.

But if you are new to Super Punch-Out, or just playing this more casually, I recommend playing the whole month on your own, experimenting with strategies, trying to best your own times, having fun. You'll probably have a much better time, and the game is great and deserves that sort of experience.

I love this post,  this is so true.  Even DKC2 is the same really with all of its hidden secrets.  So satisfying to solve it by yourself, I would imagine not so much so with a walkthrough.

I dont know about you guys but there arent many first party Nintendo games from this era I'm still a virgin to.  Or even really that much top shelf stuff.  Gotta make the first playthrough worthwhile

bested alot of my super punchout times. I know you can do them faster but its more fun to figure it out for sure. I got my sandman time cut by 20 seconds through practice. For the first time ever got bear hugger under 20 and cut my nick bruiser time by half a minute. Ive always known how to stun him and dizzy him but i never figure out that KO Hit frame. Shaved a few other fighters by a second or 2. Im probably around minutes. To get anywhere near 4 Ill probaby have to look stuff up. I got all fighters to less than 52 seconds. Only a few over 30. I have no clue where the bonus point shall be but around 4 will mean look up and master. Without seeing some of the beginning dizzy combos its going to be impossible to get really low times. I know alot of fighters dizzy combos but not most of world or special circuit and without them alot those fights go on for 40+ seconds each.

Im progressing casually on dkc 2. Seeing how long it takes me just to normally get 102 percent and seeing what i remember. Im in the last world and will be around 70 percent on first run through. So 32 percent left and havent touched the bonus world yet. Not bad just going on memory and not hunting that hard.

Update: This should be the last update for a while. I'm super happy with being in the six minute range. I doubt I can do much better without looking up strats.

Super Punch Out is the only SNES game that I am particularly good at.

Playing for fastest times is so much fun. Much better than playing for high score.

I am more biased towards NES Punch Out!, but Super Punch Out! is a game that needs to be experienced.
It is such a delight and has a lot of depth. It is also much closer to the arcade classics than the NES game.

One of the many true gems you could find on the SNES.

Yeah, Super Punch Out is fantastic.

None of the boxers are as annoyingly difficult as Tyson from the NES game, but it's still a decent challenge over all, and there's a lot of depth to getting fast times and high scores.

I beat DKC2, 73%.Took a bit over 3 hours total, just playing casually, going for side stuff when I noticed it. I'll do another run and get the time down now that I'm practiced up.

I think I was at 74 or 75 when I beat it through without going back through. Just a casual playthrough to see what the time was. I was in the 3-4 hour range as well.

I now have everyone under 20 seconds except Mr. Sandman, Narcis Prince and Hoy Quarlow. I finally figured out how to get the quick KO on Mad Clown (you can't counter punch him low, you'll just hit him in the gut).

EDIT: I finally got Hoy down to 18 seconds. That took so many tries. He's horrible to quick KO because he's so random with the blocking and ducking.

There. I _finally_ got Narcis in under 20 seconds. Screw that guy, lol. Sandman might be beyond my meager abilities to beat faster than 20 seconds. Screw that big health refill that he gets.

And now I'm clocking in at under 4 minutes.

Worked on Dragon Chan, Masked Muscle, Hoy, and Nick Bruiser today. Got all their times down significantly. About to add it up but I should be in the under 7 minute above 6 minute range right now. Still alot to work on. World circuit in particular. Havent spent much time on it besides aaron ryan.

Also finished dkc 2 casual 102% run through. Clocked in at 5 hours 53 minutes. Alot of dying going for bonuses in later worlds. Bonus World animal antics is easy until dumbass squawk part(that damn squawk part you have to be patient and I never want to be). Only to 2 tries to beat screeches sprint. 1st try I forgot the shortcut barrell so I had to get the DK and sacrifice a life and start over.

I really need to work on the world circuit and rick bruiser. Thats where most of my time is. Im at 6' 37" right now. World Circuit is my least favorite to do. Hate super macho man and kagero. I got Sandman under 30 today. Shaved like 4 seconds off last time. Hes the easiest in the world to dizzy since he telegraphs his punches to counter and does the same thing every time.  but since he doesnt KO that last life takes twice as long to do and you have to nearly frame perfect gamble.

The most satisfying dizzy in the game is masked muscle. When he drops to that knee its so easy to time.

Yeah. Sandman is super easy to dizzy. The first two knockdowns are a breeze, but he's one of the toughest to get down to under 20 seconds because of that ridiculous health refill. It took so many tries.

I didn't have too much trouble with Rick. He has a very simple and reliable pattern for getting dizzy.

I thought that the real toughies for getting below 20 seconds were Sandman, Hoy and Narcis. I finally had to look up a quick KO strat on Hoy and even then it took a bunch of tries. I couldn't even dizzy Narcis so I had to figure out a method to beat him fast without the quick KO.
