I REALLY want to know what the thing with the USB cable and apparent cart-adapter is.

I'm willing to bet its a new PnP USB Copy NES for the top loader.

that would be slick

Pretty sure I openly suggested that up-thread and was shot down by "people in the know".

I would love to have a top loading CopyNES, but the shell would need to be modified for my needs. My reason for using a CopyNES is dumping countless prototypes. Many of these protos have raised EPROMs that prevent them from fitting into a top loading NES. I have to remove the metal bar on a toaster in order to have enough clearance to dump them. I would likely have to remove the top part of the shell if I were to use a top loader.

Sorry to get OT.

Yup, many of the USB CopyNES features cannot be done through the cart slot. Removing the processor is the only way to do things like resetting the system and running the debugger.

Would it be possible to use some clone system hardware to make a standalone CopyNES? Certainly such a thing would be appealing to those who don't want to sacrifice an actual NES.

Nope, because clones use the NOAC you can't pull out just the processor. The earliest clones use separate CPU/PPU so it might be possible, but those would be much more of a sacrifice.

Also keep in mind that a CopyNES is capable of operating as a normal NES so no one shouldn't be apprehensive when it comes to "sacrificing" an original deck.

With that being said, a stand-alone CopyNES would be pretty damn bad-ass.
