Is there any way the NA forums could incorporate YouTube tags, so we can watch video embedded within a post rather than linking offsite?

And, if it's possible, does anyone else think it's a good idea? My computer tends to lock up when I click a YouTube link on NA and it opens a new window. On the other hand, Youtube videos embedded in forums always work like a charm, so I'm a huge fan of YouTube tags.

It usually is simple to incorporate this feature, I did it on a different forum. In the same you u can type [.img] [./img] to add an image link, you just type [yt] />[/yt] and it embeds it. It just requires a little bit of code to be added.

Please don't do this. It's bad enough scrolling past youtube links with absolutely no descriptions that I'll never click on. Now there's big movie players all over the place with no descriptions that I'll have to scroll past and that adds up to a lot of extra work. Besides, if my shitty internet has to load extra video players and video information it might explode.

The reason you think it's a bad idea is because there will be more scrolling involved? I'm debating whether or not you're kidding. Was your post meant to be in an ironic tone, or were you serious?

Besides, the video player and video information don't really load until you click on it, so it's no different than having a small image on the screen. The YouTube embedded player is great that way.

I was just asking myself this same question yesterday, then I thought, yeah ummmm I don't think that NA has a strong enough server interface to add videos to the site. Another thing is that this site will get cluttered and I mean CLUTTERED with youtube videos if we do this and for people with dial up connections, it's gonna be horrible. I don't see why a link isn't good enough?

Now if there was a way for us to be able to turn off Youtube embedded videos, then that would be great but I don't know if that's possible and it would probably take a long time

I would think anyone going into any page that I post heavily in, with lots of pictures, hehe, and have a slow computer, is going to have some problems. I've always wondered why we weren't able to embed youtube videos here, but figured, no big deal, must be a good reason, I dunno.

I see no convenience difference between clicking on a link to open a video in a new window and clicking on an embedded player to play a video right on the page... the end result is pretty much the same.

The only added value with an embedded player on site is a screen preview, but a plain poppin' link is less visually obtrusive and doesn't require anyone to load flash panes that they may not even care to watch. Popping a new window or tab isn't that big of a deal... at least it shouldn't be.

If a video preview screen is desired, you could always just post an image along with the link and avoid introducing flash into the forum. Avoidance of flash is usually a good policy, in my experience... unless someone is specifically looking for it as destination content or it's part of the actual site structure.

These are just my two cents, of course. I kinda like how clean the forum currently is, devoid of flash.

I never joke. All joking asside, I was being serious.

It seems small. But think about it: something I don't care about crops up in tons of threads I might care about. This isn't like not clicking on a forum or a thread I don't want to read. That's easy. And it's not even like not clicking on the youtube link I don't want to click on. This is repeatedly being forced to wait for and scroll past something I don't care about.

"But," one might be thinking, "that's awfully petty! It only takes a few miliseconds to scroll past!" Multiply that by potentially one video per, say, every 5 or 6 pageviews and that's a lot of extra work and annoyance. It all adds up my man. If I waste a few seconds per week scrolling by youtubes that is too much.

And extra loading time for every page. Yes it makes a difference. And if there are two videos on the same page my computer will probably blow up, as I previously stated.

If there were a youtube thread or something that's super easy to ignore and non-intrusive. Embeded video players are intrusive. I would outright block youtube but I do go there from time to time to watch something I decide I want to load. Maybe there's a way to block embeds but allow the site itself, I dunno!

Technically, it would take about 2 minutes to do this, but I've always been on the fence about it. Maybe we should hold a vote.

Well that makes my vote automatically a big fat NO.

No Batty @ work = no Poll of the Day.

I mean we had polls of the day for a looooong time without Batty anyway...

In all seriousness, I don't care either way. I usually open videos on youtube directly even if they are embedded simply to view in a larger format.

Because you, sir, leave big shoes to fill when you don't make a poll of the day, and you know what they say about guys with big shoes, they wear big socks.

Nothing better then going to work and starting the day off with a good laugh from your twisted sense of humor... !

Please no. That is an auto block for me at work as well. Plus this isn't youtube so why do we really need it. Is it really that hard to copy and paste a link? If I want to see the video I can just click the link.

Voted no. In all honestly, I wouldnt mind being able to stick a video in here and there sometimes, but I have a feeling it would get abused, a LOT. Then it would just become annoying. Plus if its going to block these guys from being able to access NA from their jobs, they might actually have to do some work... lame.
