If Hudson had just given us a traditional health bar (or even just a 1 hit = death deal) then this game would be way more fun. I could see myself enjoying the game quite a bit had they done so.

But no....they had to ruin that with this stupid constantly dwindling health bar.

It's not a health bar, it's how long the acid trip lasts, he's consistently coming down from his killer high unless you keep poppin those fruit shaped pills
 

My strategy of going for progress rather than concern myself with low score paid off. My score looks ridiculous for a low score contest, but hey, 5th place. I couldn't have done any better without beating the game with a low score, and there was no way I was going to do that yet.

 

Test #1 - Full health/Dino = no 2,000
Test #2 - Full health/Skateboard = +2,000
Test #3 - Full health/Bareass = +2,000
Test #4 - (-)1 health bar/Bareass = +2,000

So the only factor would be the Dino seeing as everything else gave 2,000 points...even with missing a bar of health.

I always thought you got the bonus for finishing the level without a weapon.  And also for having the skateboard at the end.

Not sure because I got it when finishing with the standard weapon/skateboard as well as having the standard weapon/no skateboard.
 

The skateboard 100% gives you the 2000.  I don't understand why the game would give you 2000 with a weapon at the end, but hey it could be!  Maybe it's something you grab in the level.

Well I mean I know for fact that it isn't just the skateboard because I ran through without picking up anything at all and still got it.

Yes, that's right.  To recap:

- Points for finishing with skateboard
- Points for finishing with no upgrades (I'm reasonably confident about this)
- Not sure if points for any other condition.
 

I also got points for just having the hatchet upgrade as well but once I get home I will test it again.

Here's my one and only attempt for the week!

It's too bad this is an "end on Life 0" contest.  I kept playing.  I cleared this level on the next try and then proceeded to find a 3-UP in the next stage.  I ended up finishing World 5 and beating all of World 6 before reaching Game Over.  Final score was 275,380.  I could probably beat the game or get close to it if I tried again.

Oh noooo. If you only would have had one more life. Those "came so close" moments in a contest can be infuriating.
 

If I recall correctly, the same thing happened to me last year during Adventure Island 3.  I ended up 1CCing that one in a later try.

The frustrating thing is that I'm pretty sure your lives are capped at 9 and that I had gotten extra lives that didn't count since I was maxed out.

I will say it was fun to just keep hanging on like I did on my last life.  I was at the brink a few times and then got another life at the right moment.
 

Either that or get 1-ups at the Egg-a-Wheel when you don't need em......The last time I played I got like 5 in a row between worlds 1 and 2.

What's the deal with the random extra levels or random other levels, I'm on my second run today and on the first island I got a different Forrest level and an orange level, second run I got a swimming level and a climbing level instead... Weird ass game ... That's with resets

Ahhh glad to be home from work.....time to put some hours into Adventure Island deux.

I've got my game on pause at home with a little over 200k! Be done at work in 3 hours 😝
 

You can't do that, if you go to work your run is automatically disqualified. You either skip work, or power off the NES, you can't have both man!

The contest ends Sunday, 6/12/16 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted. You may not go to work, leave your NES on and come back from work to continue your game.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun
