Victor Sandberg, is going to try to go for the Marathon record of continuous Arcade gameplay.  His goal is 100 hours, playing Missile Command

Starts 3am CST

FB:
https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/1375023366083063/

The longest current marathon is 84 hours 38 minutes, (George Leutz playing Qbert)

Victor already has the Marathon record point score for Missile Command (81.8 million), which is probably why his primary goal is a time goal,  (although he also wants to top his current high and surpass 100 million points.)

Does he have to no-life it, or can he die and use more quarters for restarts, just as long as he is playing for 100 hours?

On a more serious note, I've played EarthBound today for so long, I feel all tense and mentally worn out.
Then you called your mother and felt better?

You get extra lives in this variation, enough where you can occasionally take breaks.

Game over=Game over though, you can just keep feeding quarters.

And also occasionally the machine will reset, if you don't track the city count just right, which also ends the marathon. (Missile Command is probably the trickiest game to Marathon)

There is a 5-life limit tournament setting also, but that's a different ball-game.

Very interesting. Watched Bill Carlson(sp?) do this record. The hard thing about missle command is you have to be in a certain point range at point of the game or it will give you a kill screen an reset the game.

Bill Carlton, and pretty sure its the City count, not score you need to worry about.

Victor has an integrated program he uses to track it. So It's a non issue for him. Bill on the other hand, has had countless attempts ruined.

I know Bill since he's somewhat local, he's a really awesome guy that has just had the worst luck when it comes to setting the Missile Command score. Props to anyone who can focus on this game for 100 hours, I could only make it 5-10 minutes whenever I played it.

44 hours in and still going!

edit: looks like he just stepped away to take a break, so don't be confused if you tune in and don't see him playing.

I tried watching at work today but it has the site blocked. It's been interesting so far. On all the stats on the right side of the screen, what does the Power stat mean? I don't think it's an in-game stat but I have seen it fluctuate occasionally. Maybe it's the amount of energy the gamer has left? Or possibly the strength of the explosions?

Edit: I see he is typing in the power stats where all the other stats are automatically added in, still don't know what it means though.

The power stat is how good he's playing

» If he's doing good and getting bonus cities and not losing any, power meter goes up

» If he's losing cities it goes down

Think of it as a way to monitor how well you are playing

You seem to be pretty knowledgable JD, why does it seem like sometimes he loses cities on purpose? Is that some kind of technique to avoid a game resetting kill screen? Do you know what the reasoning is? This is interesting to watch. I doubt he'll get to 100 hours but I bet he'll reach 100 million no problem.

If you end up with around 253 to 259 cities, the game resets

If you go over 255, your are actually rolling to zero and above that.

There is a bug when you hit 810k, that gives you 176 cities, so you have to make sure you don't hit the above numbers. the keypad in the middle tracks all the stats for him, to keep score and track all that.

That would be a good time for him to take a rest break for awhile before hitting 810k.  Then he won't have to worry about extra cities or any game killing resets.  Looks like he's been doing that already anyway as well as doing it in the early levels as he loses less cities early on.

Thanks for the links and the info JD. Pretty cool stuff. You might want to change the subtitle of this thread to the correct date though so people who haven't seen this thread yet don't think that it's something that happened back in October.

Was just gonna say the same.  I haven't been watching non stop but I have been popping in every 30-45 minutes. He's at 67 hours now! What a beast.  If he hits 100 hours he would probably be just shy of 150 million. I don't know if he hits 100 still but I'm sure he will hold on long enough to break the continuos play record. 86 hours?

This is kind of mesmerizing. I can't imagine having the stamina to do it for 10 hours, much less 100.

He's apparently passed the 100 million mark, and is very close to 10000 levels done, which would mean two goals accomplished out of three -- but right now they're trying to figure out if they've miscounted the number of millions (in the score) by one. That's not a problem I'd want to have in his situation!

I've been watching for the past hour or so. These marathon runs are amazing. There is absolutely no way I would be able to last longer than even a few hours, let alone 68!
