If you guys can complete the rest of the games on the list before the last 2 days of the year, I am a pro at both the NES and Aladdin carts for Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy on the NES and can do whichever version I feel like or both (I usually prefer the NES cart for being the one I had growing up). But since I already played the Genesis version earlier this year and those NES versions last year and have plenty of stuff I would much rather work on (RPGs for PS1), I am not going to bother if the goal won't be reached anyway.

A good question though: are there any games on this list that nobody on NA has ever beaten before? Has anyone been keeping track of which ones always get missed? Instead of going around in circles year after year it would be interesting to answer this question and put those particular titles in bold for the beginning of next year. (if the goal is not reached that is)

All the licensed games were beaten in 2012:

http://nintendoage.com/forum/mess...

The number of points each game is worth is based on how long it took to beat them in 2012 and 2013, so it's a good indicator of which games are giving people trouble.  Of course, there were some not too difficult games that no one beat until late in the year, so they got high point values as well.

Got busy again, had no time to play games until now.
I see you guys left all the most difficult games!
Arkanoid, Q*Bert, Ultimate Air Combat, ugh.
But there are definitely some I can still beat.

Surprised at a few of them still on there.
Linus Spacehead and Carmen Sandiego are both pretty easy (the latter just takes time, very repetitive).
Castlequest is easy with a walkthrough.

If anyone wants to try Track & Field II, there's a code some pages back for where I made it so far.
Couldn't get past the last swimming match, though. Should save someone some time if they think they can do it.

So, I've been thinking about next year's thread. I remember last year around this time saying that I didn't want to do unlicensed again, but a number of people wanted otherwise, so we gave it another go. Unfortunately, we have even fewer unlicensed games completed this year. And even though it says 74/91, it's actually not very close to being finished. That's because of all the multicarts (especially Action 52), so in reality we're 99/156 with everything taken into consideration. There's actually quite a few more games to complete when you break it down like that.

I think for 2015, rather than try to complete unlicensed games for a third year, we should instead try to beat all licensed PAL games that weren't released in the Americas (I would say "exclusives," but some of the games were released in Japan). That should be our "side goal" for next year. Here's my reasoning (and don't say do them all, because that's not gonna happen):

1) The list is much shorter, and much more doable. It's about 35 games.

2) There's a lot of excellent games, like Gimmick & Ufouria. Plus, Banana Prince, Devil World, Hammerin' Harry, New Ghostbusters II, Over Horizon, Parodius Da - the average quality is much higher.

3) It gives us a new challenge and new games to play after two years of doing the same thing.

Thoughts?

^I think that's a great idea, and a wise change of scenery. Then, if 2015 meets with success, NA can try for the whole thing once and for all (US + PAL + unlicensed) in 2016.

I think that sounds ok too, scary. I do feel bad about tucking tail and running from the unlicensed list. Also, I wonder if we won't be a bit more reliant on our European members for completing some of those. Many of us here are original-only, and some of those games just don't work on US systems. (There's also fewer people around here excited to drop big bucks on rare sports carts like Rackets & Rivals and Tecmo World Cup Soccer.)

How are you going to assign points for them? I suppose it could be done as they fall; like the first few to go could be worth 1 each, the next few 2 each, etc. Not the most scientific, but I suspect the ones that are long, tedious, or difficult will last longer.

The PAL idea sounds cool, I guess my vote on it would be no though, as I don't have any of those games nor any interest acquiring them (I don't play on emulators). If enough people are into it though I'd say go for it. Unlicensed seems to have minimal interest, especially considering how many of those games are pretty awful .

Also picked up The Last Starfighter so I've been working on that. Still have all night to see what I can do!

I know you collect Famicom games, so you could play those versions if you want.

Each game would be worth 5.5 points, which is the average of all the current games.

I actually have a decent stash of PAL games: Crackout, Smurfs, Ufouria, Hammmerin Harry, Banana Prince, New Ghostbusters 2, Parasol Stars, Noah's Ark, and Over Horizon (maybe one or two others that I'm not thinking of). I could also contribute to Devil World, Rodland, or Trolls in Crazyland because I have Famicom versions of those. I wouldn't be able to help with the sports/racing games, though.

I've thought about buying a PAL console, because I also have Asterix, Beauty and the Beast, Disney's Alladin, and Elite but those are all unplayable on my NTSC consoles. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure my TVs wouldn't support that signal.

In any event, I'm already excited for next year's challenge. It doesn't seem like anybody has ever won the thread twice, much less been a back-to-back champion. I'm eager to see if I can do better. (No offense, anyone, but I don't think anybody will catch me in the last three weeks of this year.)

Is anyone still working on Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? I actually finished the game the other day, but don't want to take credit for it if someone has been slugging away at it for a while and is close to being done. The game is so damn repetitive and long (80 cases seems a bit excessive to beat the game. They should have done like 40), but easy enough to complete. I'll take credit for it if no one else is interested in it.

If the US licensed set was already completed in 2012, I would just remove it to force people to do something different like try to beat the SNES or Game Boy games the following year instead or go for the full PAL set including games that were released in other regions rather than just counting the exclusives. Just eliminate games that were released in the USA but weren't released in PAL regions. The SNES and Game Boy sections don't seem to get nearly as much activity because everyone's focused on redoing the NES time and again when that goal was already reached.

I was working through it with my son, but we aren't done yet.  He's so excited about Christmas that slogging through more cases isn't how he wants to spend the next few weeks.  Go ahead and claim it!

Totally agree with you - 40 cases seems about right.   There aren't enough suspects/clues to make finishing 80 very fun.

I don't doubt that, Nick. The only reason I pulled away this year is because you seemed to disappear for a couple of months.

Also, congrats to bimmy on Carmen Sandiego. That would be a test of patience, for sure. I'm thinking of being the one to tackle it next year.

And @Rick

I think the NES thread will be the most-contested for years to come because there's just so many NES nuts on this board. I know my love of NES/Famicom dwarfs my fondness for everything else Nintendo has ever done combined. If the NES thread disappeared, I wouldn't be re-directing all my energies into the SNES or GB threads. I play a few of those here and there, but they're just not my passion.

One problem with the SNES library is the sheer number of sports games. On Sega-16 that's been one of our biggest obstacles in doing the Genesis library.

The Game Boy library, though, is very doable in one year, and I don't think it'd take that much of a push to get it done. Most of the games are considerably shorter than the average console game, for obvious reasons (e.g. battery life). A few of the puzzle games are brutal, though.

BTW the number of translations from the Famicom's early years is slowly creeping upward; IIRC 1983-1985 is almost complete. Maybe someday it'll be possible to do a "Can NA Beat Every NES/Famicom game from 1983-1988?" thread or something similar.

Thanks and it certainly was a test of patience.  I started working on it a couple weeks ago and was doing like 4 or 5 cases at a time.  Last week, I had gotten myself up into the 40s and decided to just finish the game off, so I ended up doing like half the game in one night.  By the time I finished, I felt like my brain was going to melt

I'm taking on Back to the Future II & III, never played it other than to make sure it worked when I got it, so if anybody has helpful tips or pointers let a brother know! I will at least make it close even if I have to call off work for the next 2 weeks and play NES 14 hours a day . Just don't tell my better half!!!

6 missions into Ultimate Air Combat. Just as I predicted, the difficulty ramps up fast out of nowhere. The air combat gets intense, but the ground assault missions stay pretty simple. Hoping to have it beat pretty soon.

I don't think I'm going to be able to get to Dungeon Magic in time. Might try it for next year.

Has anyone tried tackling Hudson Hawk yet? I've just started playing it and I can beat the first level, only 2 more to go after that, shouldn't be too difficult, but the controls just leave so much to be desired.
