I just picked up an AVS and was curious as to what the optimum settings should be. I want to get the most out of the console.

A lot of it is up to you.

I like the unsaturated v6 color palette,. extra sprites on, and standard 4:3 setting.

TV setting or AVS settings?
I have no scan lines and extra sprites always set on my AVS.

No scan lines. Extra sprites. 4:3 I think. Whatever was standard.

Haven't fooled around with the palettes yet. Maybe I should.

Oh yeah, I don't use scanlines, either.

I understand the nostalgia for them, but I have never thought that they look good.

All of these games were designed with scanlines in mind. Without them things just look way too blocky, while you may prefer it, it's not what the developers intended. They are much more essential on the 16-bit systems though IMO.

That being said I find the scanlines options on the AVS pretty weak unfortunately. I can only get one setting (3rd one over) to display even close to even, and still some variable thickness between the lines. It's fine though. Hoping this gets fixed in a future update as it did seem to get a bit better in the latest beta, maybe I'm just seeing things though.

Optimal setting for me is FCEUX palette, 3rd over scanline, standard 4:3 (otherwise scrolling is jerky), extra sprites off depending on game (I find it creates errors in a bunch of games).

Screw the developers' intentions. They created that sadistic downward zigzag path in Abadox. They can go scratch.

They didn't intend for the games to be on an HDTV, either but yet here we are. I just hate the scanline look in hi def, but that's just me. I think the rules change when you get the games on an HDTV, at least for my tastes.

How many clicks from the right is the standard 4:3 setting? It's hard to tell sometimes what the settings are since the positions aren't numbered.

Where are the color palette options? I upgraded to the latest firmware over the weekend, but can't seem to find them.

Palette options come in 1.20 beta firmwares. They are the lowest setting on Video Options.

Yeah, it is.  Check this thread for more details.  Links to the last two betas are at the bottom of the first post and are hosted on retrousb.com.
