Hey everyone!  Here we are at the end of Block 1 and this week's game is gonna be Wrecking Crew.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Game Over
  • You must start on Phase 1
  • You cannot earn any extra lives.  You can only use your 5 original lives
  • You cannot end a phase on purpose.  You must play through each one
  • Looping of stages is allowed
  • Looping of the game is prohibited
  • Highest score wins

The contest ends Sunday, 2/16/12 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Good luck everyone and have fun!

***PLEASE READ***

After the Wrecking Crew contest is over, we will be taking a 1 week break before we start Block 2 to get all the rules finalized for the next 6 games.

I don't have this game so at least I get to take a two week break after that Double Dragon contest.

You really need to start picking games I have. I would've done the Double Dragon challenge, except there were funky rules, and I wasn't about to adjust my techniques (or lack there of) to accommodate

And dammit Kevin, get into one of the new chats! lol

Yay, I have never tried this game before! Lucked into a decent CIB copy a few days after the 1st block of games were released.

Last time we held a Wrecking Crew contest, it was total fun!

Many never played this game seriously. Once you get into it, and try to score high, you understand how much complex and well made it is.

I loved Wrecking Crew as a kid. Yeah, I'm sure playing for score is complex with this one. Maybe I'll give it a go on the ol' emulator.

Yeah, it was a blast, last time.  The no-extra-lives rule should tone down the score, a bit, though, since last time I think the top 2 or 3 scores beat the Twin Galaxies records pretty handily...

So, how do we go about properly capturing the score? I was gonna suggest going for one life, but irregardless, I only made it as far as phase 15-16? The one with all the ladders and destructible ladders that looks like an O. I'll just capture the score when it pops up in the attract mode.

Also, the WC I have on my multicart has 3 lives, and I assume this is the Famicom version.  I guess I'll have a handicap in my advantage.

And the "ending the phase on purpose" refers to deliberately killing yourself to farm points?

No, that's when you're pressing select and get to the menu.

I copied this rule from twingalaxies rules, but it's useless cause the score reset. At first, I thought the rule had a reason to be here but it's totally absurd.

So just to make sure, this means that if we somehow beat all 100 levels, we're supposed to stop playing?

Good question.  This rule refers to looping a stage continuously.  For example, you cannot continuously loop stage 10 to earn points.  Looping of the game will be ok, so if you beat all 100 levels, then keep on going.

FYI, it's like a 4 hour marathon to "beat" the game, if I recall correctly... and I don't think anybody came close to getting to that high of a level last time, when we were allowed to get extra lives.

4 hours is exhausting, but its not a marathon, especially for Tom

It's been a while, but I know all of the solutions to this game. I've never beaten the game on 5-man settings, but I've gone quite a ways. Level 74 stopped me on my Twin Galaxies run, if I remember correctly. That one requires a bit of luck that I didn't get.

I probably won't make it all the way though the game given just a week to relearn everything, but just wondered if it was something to worry about ruleswise.

Really wish I had more time this week, to actually participate, instead of just watch, this is my kind of game.

I don't know how you guys compete at such a high level every week.

Anyone have a link to the previous contest results?

Here's a poor entry level of mine.  125,900

5 minutes from now someone will get 750k and say it wasn't easy. I know how this works.

It was an awesome contest, though not very well organized, we were kinda adjusting rules as we went, since none really knew the game that well, not enough to finalize the details at the start, what we were allowed to do and not.

After talking things over with guillavoie, we've decided that no looping of the game will be allowed since the game is long enough already with 100 stages.

Another rules change for everyone to be aware of: The looping of stages will be allowed because the only way to do this will be if you lose a life. Also, the rules in the first post have been adjusted to include the new rules changes.

^Yeah, that would make sense, because your limited to 5 lives, it wouldn't help anyway.

There are a few levels where looping is worth WAY more than playing through the next few, if you were likely to die anyway.

I guess It's better to say, wouldn't help indefinitely

And adds a bit of strategy

So I was playing Wrecking Crew tonight when I accidentally earned an extra life by revealing all of the letters M-A-R-I-O. Those are usually hard to get unless you're trying to, so it took me by surprise. Sure enough, I died soon after.

If you earn one by accident, you can simply finish your run when you got 1 life left, or die on purpose at the beginning of a stage without collecting any point. That's just unfair to get disqualified because you find one out of will.
