Well yeah I don't condone the toxicity that goes on and unreasonable hatred throat-slitting of the team etc,
but there is a fine line between acting that way and being passionate and appropriately critical of your team. Bandwagon fans are just along for the ride they don't really care, not invested emotionally.
My comment was mainly focused on your example of the Patriots losing in the Super Bowl and being like "oh dang, we'll get em next year" - yeah that's a mega-luxury most franchises and fanbases don't get to lean on.
Such as Cowboys fans, just to make the playoffs is HUGE - their division has been competitive forever. The Patriots division is a joke and has been for an eternity. Not taking away from them as a team, but getting a not-so-challenging 6 wins a year sure helps march towards that first-round bye etc etc.
But those people are the people i am talking about and have been the entire time. The toxic people. So i am not sure what we are even debating at this point there.
I understand your point about the Patriots. Sure the losses hurt less for a team that has better odds at winning, i will agree with you there. My point is, while it may be easier for fans who have good teams, that doesn't excuse the toxic fans from behaving like assholes and terrible fans. True fans stick by their team even through the painful losses and bad times and don't tear them to shreds, even if they may not have another chance for a while. The toxic fans do that. When the patriots suck again, and when we lose Brady and Belichik they are more than likely going to struggle. I will still enjoy watching them, and if they lose, they lose. It's part of the game, and i am sure these players don't enjoy losing either.
I feel the same with the Bruins and Celtics. I watch nearly all 82 games of the NBA season and used to watch most Bruins games as well, and have walked away from many seasons disappointed. I love sports and am passionate about them, i just don't take them nearly as serious as some people do and turn on my team at the drop of a hat. Criticism is totally cool, calling out bad plays, moves, and decisions. But some people take it a step too far, that was my whole point. Me being a Patriots fan doesn't have much to do with it since this isn't just an NFL thing and a lot of our teams have had their fair share of losing and sucky seasons.
