"Virginia is for lovers" actually is now applicable.

I say let them be miserable like every other married couple who pays taxes.

My lesbian neighbors just went to New York to get hitched and now it's legal in VA so they threw a big party.

It was FABULOUS!

Of course we have been friends forever.

They know how to party and are pretty well off.

I don't think the government should be able to force pastors and churches to perform marriage ceremonies for same sex couples as its a religious ceremony and the religion does not allow it.

This is a misconception. The issue of same-sex marriage is with regard to government recognizing and issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples. A marriage in a church by itself carries no legal weight and churches aren't required to perform a marriage.

My son... gives me Helpful Nintendo Hints that are far too complex for the adult mind to comprehend. Here's a verbatim example: "OK, there's Ganon and miniature Ganon and there's these things like jelly beans and the miniature Ganon is more powerfuller, because when you touch him the flying eagles come down and the octopus shoots red rocks and the swamp takes longer." And the hell of it is, I know he's right. - Dave Barry

being married is better for taxes though so I wouldnt think that would be miserable. Single status with no children is literally the worst status to be for taxes

I'm pretty indifferent on the matter.

I think it is a little weird for a same sex couple to raise a child though, but I'm okay with that too. I knew a girl growing up who had two moms and she turned out okay. But elementary school kids are brutal, I know she had to deal with a lot of ridiculing growing up.

We didn't have much money growing up and I was ridiculed for not having nice clothes and the way I dressed / looked.  I had friends with interracial parents who faced some social difficulties as well.  I also knew kids in my high school who had mental challenges and it was very difficult for them.  There was a girl in my high school who dealt with abuse at home, and she faced many struggles.  (These are all real examples btw, from people I knew - not just hypotheticals)

My point being--- there are a million different reasons why children can face difficulties at home, in school, etc.

I will also point out that I have several same-sex couple friends who are raising children, and in every single case the children are better off than they were previously.  A lot of them are adopted children who have rough pasts and are now in happy, healthy, loving homes with parents who care deeply for them.

Which brings me to another point.  People seem to think this only affects taxes and words on a piece of paper.  But you should see the difficulties my friends have had to encounter with adopting children.  In my area, they both can't be legally listed as adoptive parents, so it makes it really challenging for things like medical issues, and if one of the parents passes away, there are significant legal troubles they face in terms of the children.

I'm not arguing with you specifically Jone -- I know you weren't trying to say anything too harsh there - but your point made me want to bring these things up, as I think people don't necessarily always think of these factors when reconciling their opinions on this matter.

I've taught upwards of a dozen children that have been raised in a same-sex household.  From my experience, it's easier to be raised to two moms/dads than it is to be fat.  Massachusetts is obviously progressive, so it might be different where you are.  I haven't had a single parent complaint, comment, or email regarding the bullying of a student with same-sex parents in 10+ years.  While it obviously can and will happen, it's no more of a concern than any other petty middle school drama.

I think that a child being subject to ridicule due to the sexuality of their parents says more about their tormentors and their parents for knowing nothing about tolerance.

Aww man, I missed the latest hateful remarks from PolarBear. Wait, that's a good thing. I do wonder what made him back out and edit his comments though.
