Okay, to me it seems like there might be a randomness to which enemies are spawned after destroying the power-ups. I've beaten the game twice so far and the 2nd time I'm sure I destroyed more power-ups and some how ended with a much lower score... I felt like more of the lower value enemies spawned vs the 1st run I had...

Did anyone else notice this?

Ugh. I'm terrible at this game. Everytime I think I have a handle on it I accidentally explode myself.

Nope, there is a powerup/enemy hierarchy. The "better" the powerup, the stronger the enemies. For example, the question mark always spawns those coin-looking 8000 point enemies.

I need to ask since BriGuy82 and Vectrex280996 have scores well over 10 million. Did you obtain these scores by finding hidden items? As far as I can tell, there's no way in hell you can rack up those scores in a single play through of the game w/o getting those 10 and 20 million point hidden items. Also, getting the hidden 20 million item (Dezeniman-san) requires breaking the contest rules by having you bomb the exit door multiple times.

I honestly never knew about hidden items in this game. Seeing these high scores, I had to research how they were even obtainable. I found a strategywiki page on this game and found out there. I don't think I'm going to bother participating this week, this game is a mess.

If you blow up a specific powerup in a specific way, you can get 2.5 million easily. Other powerup can earn you millions of points by blowing them up the same way. Also, the later bonus stages can be pretty generous when you have a powered up Bomberman.
And no, I didn't obtain secret items at all.

None of us that scored that high found any hidden items or broke the contest rules by door bombing or timer-abuse.

LIke Vectrex said, if you intentionally blow up the fire-proof-suit or the question-block AND manage to blast ALL of the spawned enemies in ONE hit, it is worth millions per event.  Most of the others are at least worth a few hundred thousand per level.

Vectrex did a better job of racking up points on the bonus stages, though, for sure.

Just plant a bomb above the bonus, and another one right under the bonus. Blast the first bomb, then blast the other one as soon as the enemies appear. The only powerup you don't want to blast is a bomb/fire powerup, since they're going to be your best friend in the bonus levels.

And yes, the bonus stages are very generous if played correctly

Yeah, its all about just bombing the power-ups... But you have to keep powered-up just enough to do some damage in the bonuses levels too. I wasn't even aware that there were hidden bonus items... But I do agree that this game is kinda a mess. I've never played any other version, but I didn't like the scoring issues, excess power ups( lack  of difficulty). Once your fully powered up your basically invincible. This game could've been really great instead of just mediocre.

I only got one attempt in after we settled the rules but I think it turned out well.  I think I door bombed 3 times but it was always low point enemies and I didn't bother to combo.

I guess I'm not gonna sweep the puzzle category though, darn!

This was the one where I probably should have collected bombs/firepower rather than blown them up for scoring...  (GCW Zero wasn't doing me any favors, either but had to play during a flight home)

I remember playing Bomberman 2 back in the day, but never the original. This game is harder than I remember the sequel being.

Couldn't devote a lot of time this week so I'm not too thrilled about my score. I'll put a lot more effort into Dragon Spirit this coming week to make up for it.

Haha I must say I got lucky that there wasn't too many competitors this week.

My score does look pretty weak compared to the top 4 though
