So I got my first proto! Bought in ebay auction because the label looked goofy (and I oddly enjoy the goofy ones and said screw it). Received today and while cleaning through all my new carts I noticed it felt heavy. Popped it and its a prototype, super excited to own my first one.

Congrats! That's a nice surprise bonus for you and, if you're going to get one of the baseball games for NES, that's one of the top ones to get too

From photo I took last night. Ended up buying it because the label looked goofy (upside down / appeared to just be taped on). I am guessing the label was stuck on later down the line as it just seems like a cut label that someone put on it with packing tape.

Guessing they thought it was "right side up" as when its in the system, the label is then facing you right side up (if that makes sense).

Kind of want to check whats under that label (if anything)

yeah I bet that label was bought off EBAY or some website and slapped on top of where the original label or writing on cart was.

And yeah Id look underneath as well. Curiousity would get to me.

Nice find!

Not sure yet, have to put some time in this week to check it out. Seems like a fairly early revision (chip says Ver 0.2 and CIC date stamp is 9139 so around Sept 23rd 1991 (game released July 1992). I would have to assume there is SOME differences

The nice thing about it being taped on like that is that it likely isn't adhesive itself, just regular paper, and shouldn't damage what's under it.

Nice, lucky find! The checksums are printed on the EPROM labels, so you can pretty easily check to see if it is final or not, before even dumping it, if you have/get the retail ROM.

Is this the auction you mentioned? Not a bad score for $11!

Only thing I can see on the board that would be the checksum (from zooming in on my photo) would be:

PRG1 - $4C5B
PRG2 - $1E44
CHR - $148D

4C5B / 1E44 / 148D is a Checksum-16 match to the retail release of Baseball Stars II (NTSC/USA Region).

It looks more like a cut up retail box. Definitely not a label anyone was selling!

Reminds me of my $0.50 prototype Xexyz from Blockbuster Video, since it also had a makeshift upside-down label. Of course, mine appeared to be photocopied onto a sheet of address labels and then cut and applied since there was a split near the middle and there was no color.

What’s on the rear of the cartridge?

So spoke to the seller to try and track down whatever information I could.

Sounds like he bought it from an auction "with a bunch of toys" from salvation army in St Petersburg Florida. Was hoping I could trace the origins back a bit further than that since curious the story of it ending up at a salvation army in florida. I kept the sticker I took off the box in hopes I can gleam a bit more info from it.

*EDIT* Phone number on the back of the fake label matches ROMSTARs phone number when the game was developed. So now I am curious what they printed the fake label on. Almost seems like the game came out and they just cut a box, slapped the label over the original and went "well its the same code as the retail anyways..." and sold it
