My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at the Let's Play Gaming Expo last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Oh, my WTB thread is very popular. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, Richard craniums - they all adore it. They think it's a righteous thread.
I'd also like to add that I've got my father's gun and a *scorching* price guide for aftermarket Nintendo games.
Between Dragon Warriors and nothing... I'll take Dragon Warriors - for any of my FT/FS/FO items.

Apologies in advance if this is redundant (I missed it in the thread if it's in here somewhere), but I thought I would post a shot I took of the prototype system that was playable at PRGE.  Looking at the mold, you can clearly see where the color can be applied to gain an NES look, while maintaining a unique physical form.

Anyway, Bunnyboy, please keep us updated!  I'm still excited about this, weeks later, having seen it at the expo.

Would any modifications to the system need to be done for expansion audio to come from an NTSC NES cartridge (like a Mr. Gimmick repro with the audio synth)?

No mods needed, there's analog -> digital converter chip to run expansion audio from the NES/Famicom slots to the FPGA. I don't have a Gimmick cart yet but have tested it on the PowerPak and a Madara cart. I need to get an FDS game with audio to try that too. There's a setting to adjust the relative volume coming off the cart.

The Famicom expansion port also has a pin for audio but I don't think any devices ever used it...

Bunny, if I recall, the proto system was not able to play audio off of my Akumaju Densetsu that I had on me at the time, but that you were definitely working on that. Is that the FDS audio to which you are referring, or is the VRC6 chip capability something else entirely?

Obviously, I'm no techie. :-P

PS . . . I shoulda' gotten a shot with my Jetman cart in there!

Now all we needs you to do is design an HDMI TV with Zapper support so we can use it with your new system!

BTW Brian, is it your birthday everyday? That "cake" icon by your username. You must be over a thousand by now...

You should test it when the system comes out. Both Bunnyboy's HDMI NES and the new Retron5...

I'm sure it will work on his as its a CRT. Light gun doesn't work on other types of hd TVs.

That board didn't have the A->D chip soldered on, so none of the exp audio would work on it.  I just ran out of time before the expo.

Won't work, that one can't do 720p!

Realizing that you're not making any promises, are you close to being able to mass produce at this point, or is it still R&D and prototyping right now?

I thought the HDMI NES was 480p.

Besides, if the TV upscales the resolution, it will add lag to the zappper and won't work. If you have an HDMI TV that outputs native 480i/p without processing, you might have a shot at it. Will the Zapper work with 720p refresh rate? I remember Brian going on and on about the 15kHz bandpass filter they put in it.

And that's my beef with the HDMI NES. It needs to be compatible with ALL NES accessories. In order to do that, you need analog outputs.

Pretty sure mine does 480i, 480p and 1080i.  Anyway, it still supports both HDMI and the zapper..  It's possible they may need to be used independantly hehe

Edit: yeah, actually I thought this guy was going to be 480P too, thats what it says on the O.P. change of plan?

These obsolete 480i/p and 1080i only sets (typically HD CRT or rear projection) don't behave nice with Ouya either. (720p and 1080p only)

Have you tried playing Zapper Pong on it? Try loading it on a PowerPak if you have one. If there's any timing issues, this game will reveal them pretty quick. It is included in a program called zap ruder that lets you test the timing on the NES zapper. It can be downloaded on this page:
http://pineight.com/nes/...

I certainly hope the720p picture is not stretched to 16:9 on widescreen monitors as that would be bad imo. PC monitors and other displays often don't have an aspect button or it is buried underneath a combersome menu system making it difficult to swap settings on the fly. Some TVs autodetect the aspect ratio bit for HD resolutions, so the aspect button often only works on analog inputs. 480p is the idea screen size for NES IMO, and you can enable faux scanline effects by dimming every other line. Maybe a switch can convert between resolution or enable scanlines. I own an older 1600x1200 LCD monitor that would be perfect for displaying 4:3 games. I'm not sure if this monitor would accept a 720x1280 signal. Even if it did, the aspect would likely be messed up if the new NES output in 720p. I could imagine the disaster with a full screen picture pillarboxed into a widescreen aspect ratio video feed, letterboxed onto an obsolete 4:3 monitor with no zoom options.

480p (ED) was the add on board, console is 720p (HD).  Higher res gives more horizontal integer pixel scaling options and better fake scanlines.  Of course the TV will have its own zoom/scaling options too, but this has the cleanest output from the device.  Ignore the white lines, those were for debugging

Why are you only displaying 224 vertical scanlines instead of displaying all 240? The tiny 8 pixel black bars on the top and bottom are filled in with tiles on real hardware. I'm also concerned if this will display properly on my 2005ish 1600x1200 monitor? I don't know if an older 4:3 aspect LCD monitor will display the games properly or even work with 16x9 aspect ratios. I may want to use my 4:3 monitor with the HDMI NES to build a custom NES-cade.

Also, will you be supporting analog sound outputs so I can wire up external speakers? DA converters are fairly cheap IMO. The monitor is DVI only and does not support audio pass-through.

NTSC CRTs cut off at least that much, action safe area is commonly 90%, or 216 lines.  Games hide scrolling glitches there because they know it won't be displayed.  Check out vertical scrolling in Dragon Warrior for a good example.

None at all, those 4 people will have to get a splitter instead of making the device more expensive for everyone else
