Started giving it a shot. Wow my SMK skills have gone way down. I used to be so much better... Well I guess last place is better than no place. I will keep trying and hopefully post my race rimes tonight.

Awesome records, milesp1!

I don't think I'm able to reach your or Stryphos' times, bit I will still try to improve my records.

Based on the times given, wouldn't it be 6'53"49?

Regardless, excellent job. Especially impressed by Vanilla Lake 2! I must be taking the wrong lane(s) when choosing my route. Back to the drawing board!

I'll try the math again after work.

As for vanilla lake. I go through that lane with the ice blocks. Then take an immediate left after them. Jump across the ice and stay left of the pipe.

Here are the supposed world records:
http://mkwrs.com/smk/...

Most of these records are so far beyond ridiculous I hardly believe they are real. But I guess some of these guys have been playing this game for 20+ years, so who knows.

I got a 55"34. Had a few runs that would have been in the 54's but messed it up. I'm moving onto a different track, I want to try for 6'45"00 or better overall.

Vanilla Lake 2 is my worst track based on percentage away from the world record times. Guess I need to play that one some more.

Vanilla lake 2 ive gotten down to 59 seconds. The rest of my times are meh right now. I dont know how the hell miles got 55 on vanilla lake . Jesus. I had a basically flawless run with a ghost at a higher 59 second time to help me fix a couple spots. I dont know where tgere is 4 seconds to shave off. Thats near 1 second a lap i guess

A 59 is solid for sure. If you're not using either bowser or do try that. Otherwise when you're skipping over water be sure not to bounce off any, it slows you way down.

I use bowser and occasionally dk jr. And yeah clean skids and hops  keep your top speed. I still dont know where there are 4 seconds to shave off. It felt like when i went tge extreme left over the ice hopping it was a tad slower. Learned that via the ghost when i was racing it lol. Maybe im just doing it wrong. Drifting in the original is so much harder than other mario karts. I think mario circuit 3 is my least favorite in this challenge. Bowsers castle has tge cheap blocks but mario circuit 3 has all those ridiculously hard to skid turns. Hard to have 5 laps of perfect.

I was going left after the strip of ice blocks, plus staying left of both pipes. For the rest of the rest of the track stat as close to the water as possible, and jump over the water that juts out into triangle shapes.

I always try to stay left of the first pipe. Everytime i go left to the far left pipe it seems slower. Hard to do consistently. I do stay close to water hopping over ice at all times. I really need to see this done in 55 seconds to see what im doing wrong.

my 59.19 run felt amazingly difficult for me to top.

Finally got some time to play last night. I'll be posting whenever I have a decent run at Rainbow Road where I don't fall off. Bad scores are still worth submitting!

Got some time to play today. Was able to round up some times with Koopa. I can't play any of the races besides Ghost Valley with the heavy weights. Still need to clock an acceptable time for the ice race before adding pics. I think I'll currently fall forth or fifth at this point depending on my last time.

Ghost Valley 1 – 1' 15" 34
Mario Circuit 3 – 1' 54" 60
Bowser Castle 3 – 1' 56" 71
Vanilla Lake 2 – 1' 21" 95
Rainbow Road – 2' 05" 11

Total: 8' 33" 70

I think I did my math right.  Used an online time calculator to help me out.  A big thanks goes out to Stryphos for snagging me a copy of this game while he was at Midwest Gaming Classic   I've been trying out some of these courses off and on since getting the game and finally gave them all a serious try tonight.  I started off with an overall time of 9 minutes and 16 seconds and shaved it down considerably, so I'm happy with my progress.  I know I can do better on all of these, but it has probably been like 20 years since I last played this game, so I'm a bit rusty   I am not good at drifting in this game, so I probably won't be able to get some of these times down to what some of you have achieved.  I started off using Yoshi and then tried out DK Jr. and Bowser on a couple of the tracks.  After that, I tried out Mario and shaved a few more seconds off my times.  I'll likely give this more tries over the next few days, but I doubt that I will significantly shave off more time unless I get really lucky.  If I post more updates, look for it to only be a few seconds here and there.

Course Time Lap
Ghost Valley 1 1'15"01 14"24
Mario Circuit 3 1'49"07 21"11
Bowser Castle 3 1'57"22 22"14
Vanilla Lake 2 1'07"46 12"37
Rainbow Road 1'43"61 20"46

This is what I've done with about 60-90 minutes of playing.  Not bad!

I can make these images bigger if they are too small to read, just let me know!

I've spent more time on VL2 than all of the other courses combined by far and still haven't put together a run where I haven't hit a piece of ice or had a failed jump into the water. Even with that I'll still be 10 seconds behind the top time for that track, if not more. That race is really frustrating.

Thats the race i enjoyed the most. I got 1 minute and 2 hundreths run and got a ghost because i didnt touch anything. It allowed me to get the 59"19 run and i think the other was 59'79" before that.

I also have videos of all my runs just in case.

Vanilla Lake 2 is indeed the race that I had to rethink my strategy/route, as it was (actually still is techinically my worst course relative to the world record).  I orginally had a time around 59 seconds too but spent a few hours playing it and figured out how you are supposed to do it.  Well, there is an even more agressive path that they use for the world records (referenced in the video in this thread), but that is something that would take A LONG time to achieve for even one lap, let alone the entire race.

For the record my favorite race is Rainbow Road, I love that you cannot hit any edges on the course, it allows you to do some pretty extreme corner cutting.
