If you think mortal kombat is rough, just give Pit-Fighter a try!

Lol, Pit-Fighter is terrible. There are 20 games in the USA+PAL library that can be called Fighting games. Some are really bad. I'll have to fire up Shaq Fu again to make sure, but Pit-Fighter is probably the worst one.

Oh, one of these days I will! I've heard horror stories about that, especially on SNES. I'm not great at fighting games in general, but used to be decent at the GB Mortal Kombat when I was a kid. I know I've beaten it with at least two different characters as a pre-teen. I don't think the game is actually all that hard; I just lost all my ability in my old age and need a little more practice than anticipated.

GameBoyle's review of the Game Boy version of the Shaq Fu was actually pretty positive:

I've beaten the Genesis version on Expert difficulty, but have never really played the Game Boy version.

Oh, and by the way, I found out through further play that Brain Drain has over 100 levels, past 51 they are only accessible on "Genius" difficulty (the third and highest one). I have a password for level 91, but I ht another wall at 103. I'm hoping I can come back another day and finish it. Between this and the other games I'm playing, I feel like I need a break!

I've beaten the Genesis version on Expert difficulty, but have never really played the Game Boy version.

Haven't tried on GB, but the Genesis version was alright. The SNES is where it was really weak in my experience. I always figured that since Genesis was the big system for sports icons and for arcade-style action games, that Shaq-Fu was either targeted at that system above SNES, or that it was just tacitly better due to the hardware being more amenable for those kinds of games. Either way, hope that this one treats you well.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat, another one that interests me of late is NBA Jam, I'm amazed at how tough the AI plays in that game. I might just be really bad at the game though (isn't helped that turbo is holding down start button!)

Ghostbusters beat. Pathfinding issues aside, a fun little game. Cheap deaths there near the end and final boss is much harder than the rest, but all doable if you ignore the timer.

This was my first time beating Balloon Kid. Really charming game that has that early Nintendo GB feel. Nobody talks about this one. I like these early one off Nintendo games.

Mortal Kombat is done.  I still don't feel like I got all the rust off, but I lucked my way into a way to cheese those battles where you have to fight two guys with one health bar.  For most of it, I was able to time the sweeping leg kick to get them in a loop.  That was an immense help, because not only do you face two characters back to back, but the difficulty ramps up quickly at that part as well.  In the earlier rounds, enemies will sometimes just sit and wait for you to do whatever you want and rarely use their specials.  The 2-in-1s will charge you and use specials often (and much quicker than you can).  Once you get past the 2-in-1 fights, Goro and Tsung are complete push overs (Got a Flawless on the last round with Tsung).  I wish there was a bit more of a gradual build in difficulty.  Special moves are a little tough to pull off. The controls are very methodical and respond slower that I expected. I wish I had a metronome to get the timing right.  Anyway, even though there are no voices to say "Finish Him" and the sound/music in general is lacking, it's still a fun game.  The move sets are diverse and impressive for a two button set up and the characters look a little clunky but still pretty good for the Game Boy.  I'm interested to see how things improve (or if they do) in MK 2 & 3.

Next up for me is Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (which I hear may be tough?), then probably Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle (which I know is easy).

Nice job! Let me know what you think of Rocky and Bullwinkle. It's a famously bad game, but there's apparently some different gameplay elements and minigames later in the game, which I've never seen because I haven't had the patience to get past the 2nd level.

Thanks! And you're doing good beating a lot of these.

Beat Super RC Pro Am. Pretty good conversion but it never reaches the speeds of the nes version. It starts at a very slow speed until it speeds up at the end. I'm pretty sure you only have to spell NINTENDO 3 times instead of 4.

Super is a great adaptation, but they had to slow it down as it gets really blurry on a DMG. You can barely make out graphics on it even at those speeds, so faster would not work at all.

So far Rocky & Bullwinkle isn't all that bad.  It definitely forces you to learn the levels through trial and error and repetition.  Once you get the hang of where the blind jumps will take you and which enemies can actually be attacked, then it's not too hard.  The biggest problem is that it takes a while to get back to where you were to try something again.  The controls don't feel broken or unfair at least, it's just a time investment. I'm actually having fun with it still.  Last night, I got through what I think is more than half of the second level?  And now I can do the first level in about ten minutes or less.  If there are only three levels like the instructions say, then maybe I'll get lucky and crack it tonight.

I'm 2/3rds of the way through Tasmania Story. Hated it at first, but the more I play it the more it grows on me. Feels like Mappy meets Pacman. I did pull out the instruction book and it looks like to get the ending you have to meet the "squash the required enemies" per level or per species, it's not super clear. Otherwise game just loops. I'm on level 7 of 10 with that met, but keep making dumb mistakes. Will keep at it.

Ok, I updated the requirement. I must have been trying to remember the number from when I was a kid, when it felt like a MILLION TIMES.

Super RC Pro-Am was one of my first GB games ever, hearing the music is a huge nostalgia hit.

Bought Skate or die Bad N Rad today. I've been playing it for numerous hours so far. This game is incredibly difficult. I've made it to Stage 6 thus far. This is one of those games that demands absolute perfection. EVERYTHING will kill you and since I'm going in blind, every single death trap kills me until I remember it's there. Seriously this is a rough one. The game doesn't look hard but its deceiving. I'm still planning on finishing this.

Another night of trying Rocky & Bullwinkle and got to the boss in the second level, but couldn't figure out how to beat him. What I found out is that if you die on that boss section, sometimes the game will let you retry the boss, but sometimes it will kick you out back to the very start of the level. Made for good practice for the rest of the level, at least but after 2-3 times, it started to get a little annoying. I'm pretty good on what to do without dying up until that boss, so if I can get through that, I'm hopeful I'll be able to get through the game next time.

Wow finally beat Bad N Rad. Very difficult game on the first playthrough. There is so much learning by trial and error required. It's a really cool Konami game nobody talks about. I love exploring the gameboy library. I already know almost everything about the whole nes library so it's so fun exploring a new system where I'm learning about new games.

Wow, congratulations! Thats a fun and fairly tough game. I've been at the last boss a couple of times, but never beaten it.
Yes, you're right it deserves to mentioned more often.

Thanks. It was a huge struggle. I probably did the last boss fight 20 times before I got it.

I beat Speedy Gonzales. It's one if those fake Sunsoft games that was outsourced to a different developer. I was pleasantly surprised with this one though. It is sort of like a puzzle platformer because you need to find signs to open walls and pathways to progress. There are speed sections like sonic where you go through loops. There are awkward sections where you jump a gap with a short ceiling. Though you have a really generous jump so platforming wasn't a huge problem. It was still very difficult though. The game definitely overstays its welcome and kind of got old soon before it was over. This is a long game btw.

Beat Tiny Toons 2. Really cool game. Great graphics and music. Really difficult. It has a speeder bike level similar to Battletoads which took a lot of memorization.

Beat Tiny Toon Bab's Big Break. I previously thought this one was too boring and too slow so I never finished it. But after playing the sequel, it was actually refreshing to play through a simpler and easier game. The sequel definitely improves on the graphics, controls, speed, and platforming. But this one does have switchable characters. Both are fun.

Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends is done.  I stand by my statements that it's a steep learning curve, but once you know what to do, it's not that hard to execute on it.  The fun, and I did have fun, came in the exploration and "puzzle" solving.  If the controls were bad, it would be unbearable, but the jumps work well and the platform edges are generous.  The biggest thing working against it in my opinion is that whole randomly restarting the level if you die at the boss thing.  Happened to me on the second and third level of my winning run making that final playthrough about an hour.  Without it, each level would take about 10-15 minutes when you know where to go and how to avoid stuff.  I would have liked to see more friends from the cartoon. They don't even make cameos in the levels.

I should have Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle done in a day or two as well!
