What makes that a prototype?!?!

I swear to god I just sold a SM/DH bundled with an NES that had a similar sticker on the same chip, but luckily I didn't ship it yet. I'll check when I get home...

Looks like it, but who knows? There was a thread on DP with someone showing a Wild Gunman board that had an EPROM instead of a PRG chip, but that is the only instance I can think of where a production NES game (sans the famicombox/famicom station and NWC carts) had an EPROM chip in it. This is soooo weird. I must have cleaned 150 or so Super Mario / Duck Hunts and by dumb luck I happen to find one yesterday. I peeled back the sticker and there is a window behind mine as well:

What's the take on this?

I'm not trying to steal this guys thunder, but I've never seen one of these either until today.

the boards of the two are different cuz rubtux has a mario bros.. and jone a mario bros/duckhunt

looks like its a run of them that has it? maybe they ran out of normal chips and used these for a batch?

Well, if it was in a production cart, it is the final version of the game, so its not a proto, regardless if it has an eprom or not.

Hmm strange... I have cleaned maybe like 2000 games so far and this is the second one like this which I found. The other one is this:

This game doesn't have stickers on the back & frontside of the cassette unlike the one from jonebone.

Also this game has this Japanese? info on it just like the Super Mario Bros I have.
