Good job, Doug!

I blow at this game. I can't stand the controls, and I'm not enough of a fan of the game to get used to them.
Not a good score, but I think it's decent for participation.

Awesome job, Doug!! Congrats on the roll.
Thanks! I was really pressing on that last bonus stage since I had a feeling that it was going to be the difference between me getting the rollover or not. It turns out that I was right since if I hadn't gotten that bonus I would have fallen just under 5,000 points short which would have really been a bummer.

Either way, just short or just over a million is impressive. What's the next closest score currently....like 265k? Impressive stuff man.

Updated my crappy score to the only slightly less crappy score of 57,130.

Also, I wanted to join in and say congrats to Doug too. Although I'm mirroring what others have said, that's one heck of a feat, especially with the flaws around the jump mechanics.

Pretty happy with this score and it's gonna be tough for me to do much better. IIRC I died on Mountain 11 and got all the major bonuses if not all of them.

Even though the jumping isn't done too well, I think this is an innovative title and I'm fully enjoying it. I'll get quite a bit of time Sunday so maybe I can break the 300K barrier.

EDIT: new score below, old score 231,650

Thanks! Maybe I'm giving the game designers too much credit, but I always thought the jumping mechanics were intentionally bad to simulate the difficulty of jumping from one icy ledge to the next.

Achievement motivation this week: 1/10

-------------------------
Thanks for writing. I apologize for the delay in responding to your email during this busy time of year.
In regard to your email, it is great to hear that you have found a copy of Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64. Perfect dark was a first person shooter game that was released in May of 2000. I personally enjoyed this game a lot during my mid-teen years since it allows for up to four players to play at one time. All the Perfect Dark cartridges were black.

I hope this information is what you are looking for.

-
Response I received from Nintendo customer support when I asked if they knew any thing about a black Perfect Dark cart.

Played this a few times today. Made it to mountain 8 on the last try. Fun arcade game, though the jumping really pisses you off at times. Wish I had another day to go at it.

SO close to beating all of the mountains in one game.  Got to level 30 with 2 lives in reserve.  Then, as usually happens in this game, things went bad in a hurry, losing all the men on level 30 and 31.  Oh well, best I've ever done.  Nailed almost every bonus stage (I think I missed 2 of the bonuses).

Funny story: This is the first time I've played this game since my Twin Galaxies submission, which was one of my very first ever world record attempts.  Back then, TG was just beginning to accept video submissions in place of photographs and had previously never accepted a rolled over score as anything other than a maxout.  So I was under the impression that the best I could ever do for this game was 999,990.  I submitted a video where I rolled over the scoreboard and then quit, only to find out that they accepted my score as 1,030,010.  I then got a phone call from TG asking why in the world I stopped playing.  Rather than bothering to play the game again, I left that score alone as a bit of a joke.

Great score Tom (and Doug as well). That's cool to know that you got better at it without playing since your TG submission. Impressive!

WOW! I had a feeling my score wasn't safe since your million point game on the TG scoreboard was 10 years old, but I didn't expect to see it get crushed by over 600,000 points. That's amazing! Did you tape your run for a TG submission? You even blew out the current world record by 373,420 points!

Congrats Tom! As for me I couldn't pull off a score that was similar to mine, so I'm going for one last try now before I go and get some shuteye (it's night time here)

I like this game, but I suck at it. And this week was awful for gaming time, so not much practice.

Vectrex, I have been busting my ass all week to top your score to take 3rd place and here it is. This game is funny because small breakthroughs lead to big point differences and it kept my interest in the game going (for example, I went from top score 130K to 231K in one run, and then 231K to 372K in another).

It's a shame because I was very close to passing the level I died on, which would have put me in the 450K range.

I might have time to squeeze another run in tonight, definitely one of my new favorite black box games! (nothing will ever top Mario though)

Updated to 114,720. Glad I broke 100K, but I still left a lot of points off in my run. I'm hoping I'm not done yet, but it's going to be tough for me to improve.

I had some family in visit this week, which means not much time to give some love to that great game. But, I managed to do something respectable Yesterday late at night.

Thanks guys!  I'm really glad to see that you guys are taking well to Ice Climber.  It really is one of the better black box games, once you get to know it.

I learned something new this week on this game.  When you die, you have an unlimited amount of time before your next life begins, as long as you don't move.  If you happen to die on the lower levels, you can take advantage of this by letting the polar bear scroll the screen a few floors before you continue on.  You already died once where you were, so you might as well get past it!

I did record the run, but not for TG.  Not really interested in taking my spot back now that they're charging fees for submissions.  I can post the video if you like, but honestly there's someone better.  This YouTube video shows a guy who beats every mountain on one life!  Only weird thing is that I'm not sure if this is the Japanese version of the game or what, because the yetis are replaced by seals.

I actually still want to do better.  I happen to know from using save states that the game gets insanely fast if you manage to beat all of the levels.  3 icicles are always falling and the bird just becomes ridiculous.  Even the first mountain can be a problem during the second loop!  Anyway, someday I was thinking it would be cool to see if I can put a dent into a second loop run.

That would be my guess, but it could also be an early NTSC copy with a Famicom converter. From what I understand, the seals were changed to Yetis because NOA wasn't too high on the characters clubbing seals over the head.

That video is great, but I'd still love to see your video. What did you use to record it? And TG charging for submissions now?! Boo. Guess I'll never submit one then. It's pretty sad considering that it will drive away lots of potential submissions....like yours...which makes the leaderboards inaccurate as you definitely are the record holder now....unofficially. =/
