I think something would for sure be leaked but who knows. Could this possibly be the hyperkin clone?  Don't know that best buy would sell it, but u never know.

Sometimes people talk about rumors like they are fact. I would take that "info" with a huge grain of salt. Of course he COULD know something and it would be amazing if N64 mini was real, but I don't buy it. Employees at actual game stores have told me before Majroa's Mask HD was being made for Wii U back in those days, which of course turned out to be Majora's Mask 3D on 3DS. And I've been told That the N64 was discontinued 3 months after it released back in December 1996 because it sold so horribly which obviously is a straight up lie. And I've been told that Nintendo was going to release an emulator machine specifically for Virtual Console games back before Switch was announced. So we know that's a lie too. So long story short, I don't believe it until i see proof.

If they did make an N64 mini for real, Rare titles would actually be possible depending on if they worked things out with Rare, as they seem to be slightly more open to working with them and Microsoft lately. If Banjo can be in Smash Bros, then Rare titles can be on N64 mini. IF they did get Rare on board I'd expect Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64. I'd love to see Banjo Tooie and Conker on there but for some reason I feel like they wouldn't put a 2nd Banjo game on there and they wouldn't put Conker because it's too "mature" or whatever. But realistically it would most likely be without the Rare titles.

The missing Rare titles would certainly suck, but they could go entirely with first party games and still have enough good titles to justify approximately $80 to $100.

The biggest issue would certainly be the controller, and how they would want to realistically handle extra controllers.

N64 controllers I'd imagine they'd have the same design as the originals and same size, but HOPEFULLY they'd be smart enough to not use the exact same type of joystick. Maybe at least fix the major flaw of the control sticks so they don't break so easily.

More than one thread on NA has affirmed that N64 has a great "high end" of games, then a sharp drop-off, and a Mini would be perfect for showcasing that high end and pretending the rest never existed. But its greatest appeal at the time was MULTIPLAYER. So either nobody will buy one because nobody in the target market has friends anymore, or Nintendo needs to sell the N64 Mini in a huge box that has at least 2 controllers in it. And then be ready with millions more controllers available for purchase, since there are going to be more buyers looking to cannibalize the sticks than actual Mini users.

Nintendo absolutely won't but SHOULD partner with Hori or whoever made the Brawler 64 to release those with the Mini.

N64 mini could happen but they will probably wait until they start running dry on products and sales slow down. Right now a mini would steal attention from all of the other products that Nintendo is putting out. And they are doing well financially at the moment.

I think after another year or two if developers start getting tired of developing for switch and Switch game sales start to slow down, then they might unleash an N64 mini

Knowing Nintendo, they left it up to this guy at Best Buy to coordinate the marketing efforts for this N64 mini. This is the result of that.

Then Nintendo will do a North American release with 3 units to each store, in December.

They'll sell a total of 5,000 units the first week.... or something ASTRONOMICALLY high for them.

I REALLY doubt it. IIRC the hardware architecture for the n64 is really weird and screwy which is why emulation is still a pain for it. If emulation was fine, I'm positive there would be one out already.

I don't get why people are referring to emulation complications on N64. Nintendo already figured this out a long time ago on Wii virtual console. And they did it again in hdmi on Wii U.

The Wii hardware is like 13 years old now and it's essentially just GameCube hardware which is like 18 years old. Dont forget, we also had N64 emulation on GameCube with ocarina of time master quest. I think they already figured this out a long time ago and it's just a matter of optimization.

If they could sell Wii mini hardware in 2013 for $100 retail, I bet they could come up with some hardware in 2019 for around the same price or less

I'll wait 'till there's an official announcement. If the employee isn't into games as much, all the more reason for me NOT to believe him. He could very well be confusing it with the Ultra Retron console or something else.

I looked and its only for a handful of games.  I think the issue is getting all of them to work.  Just like emulators some games work great, others crash or have bugs.  That being said the NES / SNES classic wasn't compatible with every game either but I think it was just easier to do.  Trying to emulate it and force it in HD could be an issue, plus it might look awful.

Wasn't there something about the N64 that dulled the graphics to look better on a CRT?  My memory is misty on this but I recall there's some reason why changing the way the video output on an N64 looks terrible.

It wasn't that great of emulation (seriously, I remember people bitching about VC emulation in general back in the day), and as guitarzombie pointed out, it only had to support a small handful of games.

I doubt that you're going to get an ARM processor to handle the various emulators needed for an expected number of different emulators that are tweaked for optimum functionality, as it is supposed to be a plug n play device. So the question is can they repurpose Wii U hardware in a small box and still keep it under $100 retail.

That sounds like a tall order. Nintendo has good engineers, but this might be a ways off.

Who knows? Could very well be something in development down the pipeline. At the same time, it also could NOT be. I work in electronics retail, and all I know is that I haven't heard of anything yet.

It's always a "grain-of-salt" thing anyways no matter what for me. Y'know, the ol' "Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see" kind of thing? Still can't be 100% sure without any substantial evidence, even with something more grounded as an official annoucement or to a lesser degree a much more undeniable leak or something.

You wouldn't believe how many people came up to me and were saying the PS4 or PS5 is coming out soon... when the PS3 was just launched. lol

100% re: grain of salt. I honestly didn't put this thread up intending to be like "hey guys it's happening!!!" so much as just "here's an interesting thing I heard, let's chat about it". Drum up some discussion ya know?

Of course I fully expected to get some snide comments, but overall I think the discussion is at least happening so all good IMO.

Oh, of course. At the very least, it is fun to spectualte. (I don't mean to come off snide-y or anything, so appologies if I did)

As someone mentioned before, Nintendo's 64 emulation is far better on the VC than anything outside of it. While none of us can prove anthing, given Nintendo's track record on how they handle stuff like this, I can see it being a very well made product, even though everything sill remains to be seen. I do wonder how they'd tackle the 64's analog if anything-- that might be my biggest concern over anything emulation-wise.
